Since when is the referee called umpire?

Even though I am pretty good at English I never knew the fact that the referee is sometimes called umpire. Perhaps it is called that way only in certain sports. I never heard of a football / soccer umpire but when I watch table tennis I see that people call the referee "umpire". Is there any difference between these two words? Can anyone that knows English better than me explain about them a little more?

Even in Cricket referee is called an umpire.... It is a lame logic but I think umpire remains stationary and referee always moves
