Stuffed Shells

United States

That's what I am making for supper tonight. I don't always make it the exact way that I was taught, but tonight I will be. Well, minus the fact that it's regular spinach and not creamed. I couldn't find creamed spinach anywhere. It's a treat for my family as I don't often make it. I loathe the process of filling the shell and have considered making this in "lasagna" form more than once. I forgot the bread, but then, we don't really need bread to go with this. Oh, and another reason I love this is the left overs. It's even better the next day.

I've never heard of making it with creamed spinach. Interesting.

My best friend's mom is the one who taught me, and we always used cream spinach and sage sausage. It's delicious that way.

We used to get shells in with our pasta shipment at work and haven't in a long time. I need to find some and make this.

I didn't see a lot of variety at the dollar store I went to. Of course, I was only looking for the sugar and oil. I didn't pay much attention to anything else.

@thislittlepennyearns Hmm, I will have to look when I go to the dollar tree next.

By 'shells', I presume that you mean pasta shells (conchiglioni). I agree that they are a right royal pain to stuff and probably the best way to do it is with a piping bag. I also like filled cannelloni (pasta tubes about an inch in diameter), which are also a big PITA to fill. I find that it's a lot easier to take fresh lasagne sheets, lay a line of stuffing near one edge and roll them up, very much like making stuffed pancakes. I use either spinach and ricotta or other fillings based on ground meat and then bake them in a tomato sauce.

Ah, I looked it up and yes those are the shells. I do not think a piping bag would work for my purpose, as I stuff mine with ground sausage flavored in sage, spinach, spaghetti (marinara) sauce and cheese. I have not ever used cannelloni. Using cheeses like Ricotta makes my stomach turn. As a child, my mother's favorite dish to make was manicotti, but I wasn't a fan of all the cheese blend.

@snowy22315 Noble Idea, but it wasn't to be. I made fewer than I usually do, but I thought for sure there'd be some left over. Apparently, everyone was hungry.

It wasn't too bad. It's hot outside but the kitchen didn't get too terribly hot, atleast. I am eating some now, and will save the rest for over the next few meals.

I made them years ago, but now too lazy for even bother.

I do not make them very often because it is a tedious process. It's funny because I do not mind chopping onion, pepper, and mushrooms for a spaghetti, but get aggravated when having to stuff a shell.

That's an interesting dinner. You can make your own creamed spinach if you must have it.

Yes, this crossed my mind but I didn't bother with doing that. The shells were good with just plain ol' spinach all the same.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Good old plain spinach is healthier, anyway.

@sallypup This is true. I prefer Collards, but I don't think it would go well in stuffed shells.

haha. I don't eat much pasta, but when I do, I love it. I used to get shells and white cheddar from pasta roni and eat it for lunch. I had to stop that because, well, ya know, pasta isn't exactly great for the waistline.

What else do you put in there? Hope you enjoy it.

Spinach, Sausage with Sage in it, cheese. I mix all of that together with a bit of pasta sauce and then I put more cheese and pasta sauce on top of the shells once they are prepared, before going in the oven.
