When there is smoke, there is fire

No, I’m not referring to the adage. I am speaking of the real smoke and fire. Whenever I heard sirens, it makes my heart to throb. Upon hearing the sound, I always go outside to look for upsurge of smoke. It was not long ago that it happened nearby in our house. I was not at home when the fire broke out but it’s clear by just looking the thick smoke it’s not far away from us. I tried to call the people at home but nobody answered. My phone rang and it’s my sister’s number reported the incident. The fire destroyed four houses. We’re just thankful that the firemen are quick to respond and able to control and put out the fire. Yesterday, there's incident of fire again at the distant part of the City.

When you are traumatised by an event in life it usually lingers on and becomes part of your alarm system whenever you see similar incidents same as yours. When I got work here in Manila, I usually go out during weekends on my own since I do not have many friends yet from work, I would go to malls and enjoy my freetime there. Then all of a sudden while doing some window shopping I heard a loud banging near the moviehouse. I realized then that a bomb was set off and see people rushing out of the moviehouse then the people start rushing out of the mall. It was really intense and because of that I became easily started when I hear loud banging noise around. It took me several months before I started moving out of the house after witnessing that event.

I witness several incidents of fire before and it's big fire and I don't want it to happen with us and I am hoping. I am very careful at home especially with cooking appliances and electricity. I always give reminders to the people and never allowed battery charging during sleeping hours. Your experience was kinda traumatic. Same here, before when there are bombing threats, I want to stay at home because of fear but I realized that it's more horrible when you don't have earning and food to feed.

@ZedSmart True but the incident had taught me to be aware of my surroundings. Nowadays I keep it a habit to always roam around the place you are about to visit and see if there are strange looking people around you. Although I may sound paranoid but it has become a habit of mine to be vigilant even I see no threat to the place I am in. I guess that was what I learned from that trauma.

@rsa101 It's always better to be safe than regret later. I already bear that in mind, and it's good to be vigilant and careful. Bad elements are just around the corner and ready to strike, we should be aware of our surroundings.

Yes, we were. There's still enough distance from our house and the fact that the firefighters are there already, it eased up my worry.

It was a relief knowing that there's enough distance before our house. It's quick and sudden especially the house where the fire started are made of light materials. The fire spread already in the whole house before the firefighters arrived.

I'm reminded of the time when another house in my block of row houses caught fire just a couple of doors from me. When houses are all connected, as row houses are, fire can quickly spread. So we were very worried. Fortunately, they got the fire out before any others were burned.

If the other people around are just vigilant, quick to report and responding while firetrucks and men are on its way, It can prevent from getting further.

our dirty kitchen caught fire before. it left a scar in my sister's arm. now, she is so careful regarding fire. but once she was so careless. the candle in the altar is about to be consumed but since the wax still lights the wick, she did not blow off the fire even though i told her. few minutes after, the fire got bigger. she was hysterical again while i and my son calmly put off the fire through water. the altar was destroyed and she fixed it. when my brother came home, she did not tell my brother though i told her to. she said 'never mind, i fixed the altar already'.

@ZedSmart that is true. however, the adrenaline rush should be in good place when we are in panic.

That is why I discouraged everybody at home not to use candles when there is power service interruptions during night time. It's good that you were there and your son and put out the fire quickly. Some people can't think on solutions when in panic.
