Poem Wyvern

A poem about a Wyvern, a dragon-like creature with two legs that spits venom rather than fire. They were common in European folklore once Wyvern The beast lies dead, and the kingdom is in joy But I was beaten to the kill by a shepherd boy My army of archers with arrows and armour of gold Have stalked the serpent since glaciers made all around cold My sorcery has long since protected you all But you reward only the child who made the Wyvern head fall Don't raise a toast or sup from your flagon The creature was not even a proper dragon It breathed only venom and had two feet not four By rewarding the child you dare leave me poor He slew the monster while it lay on the sandbank sleeping True heroes fought it alive, leaving widows weeping A lad barely walking, swung a simple wood-cutter's axe While the serpent slumbered after its latest mortal snacks. An opportune act, in a moment of happenstance Robs me of my destiny. It is I you should celebrate in this minstrel dance Hear me King for My men and I dedicated our whole lives to the demon's slaughter But you now cheerfully give some upstart child the right to wed your princess daughter For chopping its head off while it lay asleep He should have been tending to his sheep Leaving the abomination for me and my men Who were promised handsome rewards for the day when We rid your fair land of the cursed giant lake-dwelling wyvern Now I get nothing you say, leaving me no choice but to turn My forces loose to obliterate the shepherd's apprentice Archers I summon thee, destroy the Royal Family palace! You dare to kill me by shooting me full of arrows instead? Don't you realise that in chopping off the slumbering Wyvern's head The young man robbed you of the wages for your aeon long quest? You are now entitled to nothing from the regal treasure chest. Oh, the young man promised to share his earnings with you I hear Perhaps I would have earned too but not now I fear In my treasonous attack upon you all I brought the grim reaper to my dying heart's call I was so foolish, forgive me for missing a wisdom it's now too late to learn They say my Hell will be ruled by a thousand wide awake wyvern. Dance and drink on, enjoy the hour You no longer need this fading wizard's protective power Should wyvern, dragon, and griffin attack The children of shepherds will watch your back I leave my golden army in your thrall To Wyvern Hell I feel my soul fall Arthur Chappell Youtube - song apparently about a Wyvern, but no translation. Sounds lovely though
