Day 12
Luke 5:1
Luke 5:1 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
6 And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
Have you ever felt that what you are doing is hopeless? You know it’s what you’re supposed to be doing, yet everything you do, comes to naught. You make little to no headway in your endeavors.
It was Peter’s boat Jesus got into to preach the Word to the people. It was to Peter he said to go out into the deep and let down his nets. Notice Jesus said nets, plural. However, Peter had been frustrated with the night of fishing and not catching anything, and let down one net, with the amazing result that he needed help with the catch and the boats began to sink.
It wasn’t that Peter was in the wrong profession, he was just going about it wrong. Jesus showed him a better way.
When Peter saw the results, he realized his stubbornness and confessed his insufficiency to Jesus. He was then ready to allow Jesus to work his way and follow instead of lead.
As Christians, you need to realize when to cast nets and allow Jesus to lead you, instead of taking all your book learning knowledge, and everything you’ve tried over the years, some of it successful, and some not, and allow Jesus to lead you in the way you should go.
When you apply Jesus’ knowledge to your situation, you will always come up with a successful ‘catch’, and that ‘catch’ will bear fruit for the kingdom of God.
Jesus told Peter he would catch men from then on. Peter was ready to follow. So were his partners, James and John. Together, they changed the world for the gospel. However, Peter’s trials were only just beginning. However, he was on the right track.
What are you doing that is showing little to no results? Apply Jesus’ method to your work and allow him to lead the way in everything you do.
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (KJV)
God wants you to prosper in what you do. Learn to follow and not lead, and you will succeed.
Let’s pray: Father, too often I lead, leaving you far behind. Help me turn from my way, and lean on you to lead me where I need to go, to obtain the results you want to give me. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
