One of our workshop 'notebooks'

We have quite a well-equipped workshop on our little property and have always enjoyed making things rather than buying stuff ready-made. When we were first married we couldn’t afford to buy new items so over time we’ve learnt to make all sorts of things. To be honest, it’s Vince, my husband, who does most of the making but I also contribute to the planning, not to mention the fetching and carrying. When we need to write down measurements or sketch out a design, Vince asks for a ‘notebook’. This isn’t paper but a cast-off piece of timber. There is plenty of it in the workshop and it’s more solid and stays put better than a sheet of paper. When we start a new project, we grab a new piece. I’ve added a picture of one and you can see the diagram of it with some measurements. I have no idea what the diagram represents but it might have been part of a small cupboard we made to put in the caravan. Do you like do-it-yourself projects? I guess it’s just another form of craft work really.

Yes, we also like to do projects, not big things, but we crafted the shelves and the cupboards for the basement.

@JudyEv I agree, I have a nice feeling of satisfaction when I do something, even simply re-painting the ceilings or the fence outside.

It is very satisfying to be able to make something you need - big or small.

No, and I probably wouldn't trust something I built. If it isn't super simple, I'm not gonna build it!

Sigh I hear you. This putting a heater in the caravan was supposed to be a day's work. Three days later..... ... But it's just about there!

My hubby is the handyman around here and very good at what he does for being a city boy. The scraps of wood we have were given to our younger son to use in his new house for little projects. However, we do hire professionals for most things that show.

Sometimes it's best to get the professionals in. We've wished we had once or twice.

It's what you get used to, and what you get practice at doing I think.

@YrNemo Some fixes can be tricky. I hope your friend turns up soon to fix your gate.

@JudyEv Right now our back gates are causing us trouble, but I can't do a thing about it. I have to wait for a family friend to find time to fix the hinge for me (he has been our tradesman for the last two years).

Its wonderful that you use those like that. I have not been doing any do it yourself lately but when I had a house I was into all that. Nice you two work together like that Judy.

Thanks. It was always hard to write on paper. There never seemed to be a flat surface to lean on.

@Courage7 I have a pencil case over there now with several pencils in it - and even a sharpener! And Vince has one of the those fat builder's pencils too.

@JudyEv but what is good in DIY is fun and it is personalized. and it is yours. ahhh maybe if you will buy bulk of raw materials and you will be able to produce a lot.

Mostly we've found it much cheaper as long as we don't factor in our time. We've not very fast at doing stuff.

I'm just the helper too - but I'm a very good one. I don't get paid much but Vince says I backchat too much to be paid!

That's a good idea and one that won't blow away. I guess you could call writing a do-it-yourself project. It would be about the only one I indulge in on a daily basis.

@JudyEv If someone else did it, it wouldn't be your writing either. So, yes, I am a crafty do it your self-er.

Certainly writing counts. No-one else is going to do it for you are they? Well, not really. It wouldn't mean nearly as much if someone else did it.

We have accumulated the tools over 47 years. It makes a project SO much easier if you have the tools you need.

It is the most useful form of craft work. I think you are wise, both of you. You can have something that is custom made for it's purpose and save $ too. Ha ha... notebook - well certainly doesn't waste much then

I think the main problem with paper was that you could never find a flat surface to write on.
