Why Buy Plastic Containers

It boggles my mind sometimes how often people still buy plastic containers. I mean, every time you buy a tub of butter, a tub of sour cream, a tub of cottage cheese, or whatever else comes in a plastic container... Once it is empty, you essentially have a free plastic container that you can use again. As for whether or not to know if it is actually cottage cheese or some leftover food you may have stored in the container, it is as simple as owning a sharpie to mark some X's on it, or even label what is actually inside. And that sharpie washes off too, so you can get multiple uses out of the container. Sometimes I think people just like to blow their money.

I've been reusing yogurt and cottage cheese containers for making ice cream. They are great so when I give it away I don't have to worry about getting the containers back.

We share a lot of food with mom, and so this helps us to also do something similar. Give her the food and we don't expect the containers back. That being said, she usually washes them and gives them back anyway. That's mom.

I only buy "glass" containers, I hate to keep food in plastic, highly unhealthy material.

Can be difficult to find food packaged in glass these days. Maybe it is more readily available in Switzerland?

@porwest Swiss authorities are banning plastic for many uses, glass is widely used for beverages now and plastic containers are less and less used.

@LadyDuck Not a bad idea, especially considering glass is way more recyclable than plastic is.

I used to have a lot of plastic containers. Now, I don't buy anything in plastic containers except my dishwasher pods. Nothing I would store anything in. They are handy for that, though.

My family actually makes fun of me because I have totes full of plastic containers from sour creams, butters etc. EXCEPT on Thanksgiving and Christmas when I come to the rescue for all of the leftovers.

Waste not, want not as they say. Most things have a purposeful reusable factor to them, and why shell out money for containers when I can just use these?

@JudyEv Yep. Not like you are really out any money. And plus, they go into the recycling bin here, so they will eventually be repurposed in some way.

I probably have too many of them. I just can't throw them away, even if I put them into the recycle bin for pickup when I do. So long as they aren't busted and I have lids for them, I keep them. It's funny, I also happen to be the go to when it comes to holiday gatherings, especially Thanksgiving, to divvy out leftovers even though everyone picks on me for saving them.

I give them to my husband for his workshop. He puts all his odds and ends in them. You're right about the markers!

We had to buy some plastic containers because we had alot of lids that didn't belong with some containers. I have alot of glass yogurt containers. I used some to wash out a paint brush when I was doing a paint by number kit. I use one in the bathroom to put my rings in.

But what if you do not buy tubs of unhealthy margarine? and use butter in the little paper boxes? What if I don`t eat dairy at all?

I reuse containers all the time. Coffee jars, peanut butter jars. I also find use for egg containers and I store water in large empty bleach bottles just in case.
