My REVENGE POST for today. (Intense drama warning)

This post is in response to Rachael Lovejoy's (@Raelove's) recent post about evil squirrels and her attempts to feed innocent crows and wild turkeys in her yard. As many of you know, squirrels (of the ground squirrel variety) were my nemesis a couple of years ago, when I tried to get a garden going at my place of work. My intent was to teach gardening to poor kids who were acting out in school. The ground squirrels ate our corn. They ate our sunflowers. They ate our green beans. They even ate our decorative cacti. At Ms Lovejoy's residence, the squirrels stole stale bread that was intended for crows, wild turkeys, and other creatures who might appreciate her efforts. The hair on the back of my neck rose as I read on. Recently, on my balcony, I started planting snow peas for the Fall. Two days ago, I "busted" two squirrels, inspecting my planters for harvestables. I chased them away, using the harshest language I know in Squirrel (no children were around). Today, I checked my snow peas, and all are sprouting. The squirrels have failed, and I have won. Within a couple of months, I will be harvesting delicious snow peas. The squirrels will have to eat their bitter acorns and whatever else it is they harvest. I will attach a picture of my first snow pea sprouts. You do not mess with The Horse.

When I lived in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, I dealt with those squirrels everyday. They drove us crazy. I bought all kinds of things to get them to stay away from my plants but they never stopped. I bought bird feeders a few times and greased the wire or rope with Vaseline and that never helped. I also had the battle all the time with the deer. One time I planted rose bushes in the front as I was told the deer would stay away from them because of the thorns. No one told the deer that though. I tried everything I read about and also some suggestions from other people. For some reason the deer, especially the babies, loved my gardens and me. They actually came up on my deck and my husband would tell me my friends were there. Even though the babies kept coming back, the mothers were not far behind. They stood at the edge of the property and watched as I sat on the steps of the porch and kept talking to them. I did end up giving in to all the wild animals and I started enjoying all of them.

Your comment make me laugh. In the end, the animals win. We have gardens when they give us permission.

@ramapo17 Do you have alligators or coral snakes down there? That would scare me! I'll take our squirrels, coyotes, possums, skunks, and the (very) occasional big cat.

@TheHorse You are right and I do love all the animals that came in our yard. I miss seeing them since I moved to Florida. At least I have good memories.

They are like infiltrators? Pony needs armed forces training... can't you see... the squirrel knows exactly where he is standing and in which direction he is aiming. Sigh...snipers don't do that..

I have squirrel and deer problems here. They both seem ravenous and I am convinced that one or both are responsible for my lack of tomatoes..I am mad

Someone told me that a perimeter of marigolds would keep the deer away. It didn't work.

Why would there be no squirrels there? I envision squirrels coming from all corners of the US to visit my farm.

Why wouldn't there be any squirrels on a farm. All the farms I know of have all kinds of wild animals.

We do not have those little pests around. I only have to fight with cats that try to chew some of my plants.

Cool! I have four sweetpeas going here, but they have seemed to not moving an inch upwards or in any direction! (Your ground squirrels behave almost like rabbits, very destructive!)

Looks like they are indeed a menace in your garden. I am hoping they would not come back and steal your vegetables and you can enjoy your harvest soon. I remember when I went to US last April there were lots of them roaming around our place. It looks harmless to us since we don't plant anything that would interest them staying at our place. Although I know they were attracted to the tree that grew on our backyard.

@TheHorse I understand your dilemma. Its them or your vegetables that are at stake in here. I guess its in their nature to find their food and looks like your garden is an easy pick for them.

I actually like squirrels, and think they're cute. But if they're feasting on my vegetables, I chase them off.

The squirrels can not go to the store to buy food so you should give them something have pity on them. Poor things they are hungry.

They sometimes steal the bird feed I put out there. They look suspiciously fat and happy to me. I took French in high school. But my Squirrel is not bad. They know to stay away after a bite or two of seed.

Cats are wonderful at keeping squirrels pushed back. And they dont try to eat my plants. I had a dog who loved to catch chipmonks and when she could the squirrels too. Miss that old girl.

@TheHorse I have no idea where to find another australian shepherd, coyote mix. She was the perfect dog. Not real needy but liked being petted. Extremely smart but refused to do silly tricks, learned what kept us happy but was not going to roll over or fetch a stick. But like a little kid she had a collection of stuffed animals that she stole from my youngest son when he outgrew them.

The lengths we went to to keep the squirrels off our bird feeders. It was an ongoing battle. We've moved....now we rarely see a squirrel. If it makes Rachel feel any better....the number one item on the roadkill buffet in Maine was the "humble" squirrel.

How do you cook them up? I like to marinade them for a couple of days in olive oil and vinegar. I recommend wild rice over regular rice.

@Morleyhunt A tangy salad on the side is also recommended. I never serve them with their heads still attached, as they still look too cute to eat.

@TheHorse they definitely need to marinade and I would recommend the wild rice over the regular white rice.

Squirrels are persistent creatures and relentless at solving and getting around obstacles we come up with to stop them. Mind the wisdom from a famous line uttered from the movie "Terminator." "I'll Be Back." And those pesky critters will be Be on guard!

The thing I find funny is that I put out bird seed for the birds and peanuts for the squirrels. The birds eat the peanuts and the squirrels eat the bird seed. And no snow peas are harmed in my yard....because I have no snow peas.
