Why Blame Wild Horses

A strange saying I hear a lot is Wild Horses couldn't make me do it. It usually involves someone saying they won't do something they either fear or dislike intensely. Someone afraid of flying to the point of never wanting to board an aircraft might say'wild horses couldn't make me do it. This is odd as wild horses, being wild (the clue is in the name) are likely to have no interest in persuading anyone to board aircraft against their will. I would think even domesticated or trained horses might struggle with a task like coraling nervous passengers into booking flight tickets, turning up at the airport or actually getting on the aircraft. Wild horses are more likely to run round in the fields not even thinking about those big metal birds flying over every now and then. @arthurchappell I also remember that saying and also find it very odd. Do you know how it got started?

@Hannihar it is believed to have its root in the medieval execution method of tying the victim between horses that then get driven wild so they run off in seperate directions, tearing the victim apart - not a nice way to go, obviously

@JudyEv yes I expect that s the meaning. I'm playing on the absurdity of taking the expression literally

@JudyEv yes, it would of course be quite painful to be hit with a shower of Alsations

@arthurchappell Some sayings are really funny if you start doing that. Like raining cats and dogs although that came from actual happenings.

You know, I've never even thought about the origin of that phrase. I've heard it all my life, but's it's a very odd thing to say when you think about it.

It's that wild horse couldn't "drag" someone into doing something meaning you can be stronger than that pulling.

@JohnRoberts yes I think the strength factor is what the saying is based on

I get the wild horses couldn´t drag me away bit, but not the wild horse couldn´t make me do it. Horse don´t give a flying leap what anyone does, wild or not
