Day 42
Luke 10:38
Luke 10:38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? Bid her therefore that she help me.
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Does it seem like you do all the work while others focus on other things than the job at hand?
Mary and Martha were the sisters of Lazarus. Martha had invited Jesus into their home. While Jesus visited with her brother, Martha was busy getting food ready, and being the proper Jewish hostess. She expected Mary would help her, as the custom was for the men to get together, while the women prepared the food. They didn’t join the men. However, Mary joined Jesus and her brother, and sat at Jesus’ feet, much to Martha’s annoyance.
When Martha asked Jesus to tell Mary to do her duty, Jesus told Martha, Mary had chosen to do the best thing needed at that time – to sit and listen to what he said.
As Christians, we are often busy doing when we need to sit and listen. There is a time and place for everything. When it comes to God’s Word, we need to break away from our busyness and focus on what God is saying to us. When we do, we will be able to do our business with pleasure instead of making it the most important part of our day.
Consider your priorities. Where is God on your list of priorities? If he isn’t number one, you need to reorder your priorities. When you do, you will find you have time for everything in your day, and you will find you even have time for the fun things in life.
Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (KJV)
You will also find your busyness will be a pleasure instead of something you need to do.
Let’s pray: Father, thank you for showing me what is important. Help me sit at your feet and listen to you before I start or continue with my day. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
