Does anyone know anything about pigeons? I think this is a Carneau pigeon but I can’t be sure. I photographed it at the Perth Royal Show in Western Australia and thought it was very attractive. Wikipedia says it has been developed by selective breeding rom the rock pigeon (Columba livia). They are known for their large size and are often used to produces squabs for meat. Isn’t squabs a strange word? It’s used to describe pigeons under about a month old. Another new word for some of you perhaps. It's a shame I had to take the photo through the wires of the cage.

It's a beautiful pigeon. Our pigeons aren't so adorned. I have heard the term squab before.

The everyday pigeon comes in lots of colours, doesn't it? I think this one does too.

@amadeo Homing pigeons have a strong sense of place and if taken miles away will eventually find their way home again.

The fancier breeds probably aren't seen in parks. Most look the same to me too.

Yes, it is. There are a great number of different breeds. The tumbler and fantail are probably the most common but they all stem from the rock pigeon. At least I think that's right.

The ordinary pigeon doesn't look like this. The tumbler and fantail pigeons are pretty spekky (spectacular) too.

I have seen these before Judy. Must have been in an old time encyclopedia or something but I do remember these. My Dad used to raise homing pigeons too.

It is too huge to be a pigeon. I like the color combination.

@JudyEv This one is large and I like it's color combination. I generally see those white and grey ones in our place.
