Welcome to today in history. It's a day of war topics. It seems you can't get away from war, whether you're fighting it or writing about it. First, is the Battle of Alesia. This wasn't taught in any of my classes, so I can honestly say I didn't know what was going on in the world in 52 BCE. It seems Julius Caesar conquered the Gauls. It was the last battle of the Gallic Wars, and considered to be Julius Caesar's greatest military achievement. Next, we come a little closer to our timeline with a book published by Stephen Crane. I'm sure many of you have read Red Badge of Courage first published in 1895, about the Civil War. My third comment on history comes in 1942 with the weapon of wonder, the V-2 missile. It was the first ballistic missile with an altitude range of 52.5 miles and the first man-made object to enter outer space. During World War II, Germany would send thousands of them against the UK and Belgium. And last, a good note in history as Germany is reunited in 1990. The Berlin Wall is down and East met West for the first time since the end of the second world war. Time to party! Thanks for reading.

I've never had the opportunity to read it, I don't think. I could be wrong as I'm thinking there was a book I read in sixth grade that was interesting, and that might have been it.

@playertwo I'm a book worm, so I try to read everything. I'll admit I don't read as many educational books as I once did.

I think there was a movie made of the Red Badge Of Courage with Audie Murphy. I've been seeing some interesting docs about the war with Germany. So glad they got that wall down.

We studied the Battle of Alesia, the modern location in France is called Alise-Sainte-Reine. I remember the day of Germany reunification, we had a friend who was separated from his brother by the "Wall".

@just4him It was so cruel to split families, many were happy to see their relatives after almost 40 years.

I recently saw a documentary program on the wall and it eventually coming down in 1990. The Soviet Union had blocked off the city when Kennedy was President trying to take control of Berlin. A massive airlift help the West Germanders survive the crisis. Remember getting assigned that Civil War book. Unbelievable bravery on both sides. Did not know about the missile name, but many were dropped by both sides during WW II.

Thinking about it, I'm quite certain I read Red Badge of Courage. I will need to read it again as the only time I read it was in sixth grade and that was a long time ago.

@dgobucks226 I must have gone to some crazy schools. Well, that's beside the fact. Our schools didn't have reading lists.

This information is not included in our history pages. It is better to know more about the past.

Yes, it's always good to know about the past. Too much is left out of history books today.
