Day 47 Luke 12:1-3 Luke 12:1 In the meantime, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trod one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. 3 Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. Have you ever wondered how people know things you haven’t told anyone? Someone always sees what you’re doing, even when you don’t think so. Jesus told his disciples to be aware or careful of the teachings of the Pharisees because it was hypocrisy. Pharisees loved to look like they were super spiritual. They made public proclamations of everything they were supposed to do – pay their alms, pray, and teaching the law. Yet, in private they were the opposite of what they portrayed to the people. Those close to them, their servants and friends who saw their actions in public and private knew what kind of person they were, and like people today, would spread gossip about each other and their masters. Even Moses couldn’t keep hidden the fact he killed an Egyptian, before he was cast from Egypt. Exodus 2:11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand. 13 And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smite thou thy fellow? 14 And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intend thou to kill me, as thou killed the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known. 15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well. When you don’t think anyone knows what you did, someone does, and will tell others until it becomes well-known. Even when you are private, God still knows what you do. He knows the motives of your heart. He knows whether what you do in public is the same as you do in private. He knows your thoughts and intentions. Nothing is hidden from him. When you least expect, God will bring to light what you think and do when you don’t think anyone knows. As Christians, your life should be focused on loving God and loving your neighbor. It should not be focused on self and what glory you can achieve for yourself. When you put others ahead of yourself, God will reward you. You don’t need to seek God’s reward. You will find God’s blessing on your life when you turn your whole life over to him. Let’s pray: Father, you know the thoughts and intents of my heart. You know my motives, and whether I seek my own reward or yours. Help me to love you and my neighbor, and not consider how my actions will benefit me, but rather let me help others first. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen. Copyright © 8 October 2018 by Valerie Routhieaux Image courtesy of Pixabay
