That Was My Watershed Moment

My elder brother had bought me an airgun. At that time I was in my early teens. My elder brother was a good shooter himself.I was one of his admirers and had a desire to be a good shooter like him. I still remember the heart-tearing incident that changed me for good. One afternoon I saw a couple of sparrows chirping at a corner of our roof.Suddenly they started fighting with each other. ( it took me years to know they were not fighting.Instead, they were loving each other ) I took my airgun, very carefully went near the corner, aimed at the fighting ( or,loving ) birds and pressed the trigger. All hell broke loose in that narrow apace. The birds' chirping turned into cries, one of them fell down dead on the floor and the other flew away crying. It all happened in such an unexpected heart touching way that I shivered with fear and guilt and nervousness and ran away from that place.I even could not summon courage to go near the fallen sparrow and ensure if it was dead or only injured. A few minutes later I somehow managed to go near the bird. The sparrow was lying dead, blood oozing from its little, thin neck. I can't describe how I was feeling then.I had turned a happily chirping bird into a lifeless body. That was the watershed moment for me. That day on I never killed any bird or animal.

Life is like that only, no one left in this world without doing any mistake. It is a great thing you changed yourself. Happy Dushera

yes every one had done wrongs but the depth of wrong matters a lot...and if that gets to regret the greater the sin the more the mental impact falls while regretting.

Yes such an incident can have a big impact on anyone's life. And we feel regret about it later.

@Shivram59 bad thoughts keep coming back to our minds, but we have to get over them and keep going ahead.

Somethings in life do bring regret in future when one know the pain in it. But if we regret and self arise to know that what done is wrong and do take strong decisions not to do further that is some to be appreciated as self realization of what is good and bad or what is evil. It is really good to know that you took a decision that further you will not do such acts...

@SHAMRACK Thanks, dear friend.I took the decision, because what I saw was heat shaking. It dawned on me that I had committed a sin.My whole existence was filled with a guilt.I took a decision I would never killed any living being.

I too had the same habit but I have never targeted towards birds or animals..My intention was only that how to use airgun..But now you are feeling guilty about it shows that you have done a wrong thing..And you said you have never killed any bird or animal that is a positive change within you..

@saumitra1 Thanks. After that incident I never killed any bird or animal except rats.Actually I had no other option.Rats had made our life very difficult. They had dug holes in the walls and flour of our house and destroyed my books. That was too much and I had to decide to trap and kill them.

@Shivram59 it is good to see that you never killed any bird or animal..But for rat you can use some other options like cage..You can use the cage..

@Shivram59 No I am not talking that..I have used the word cage, because you can use cages and leave outside your home..I am not saying that you keep them as pets..

But why did you press the trigger? What was your intention? To kill those birds or to separate them?

@dya80dya I often ask myself what I achieved by being a good shooter.Nothing at all.I killed an innocent bird. That's not an achievement. It's a sin.

@Shivram59 It seems that you were a good shooter. It's sad for that bird. At least you learned a lesson. There are people who kill for pleasure.

@MALUSE Yes,because,I realised it years later,I actually did not want to kill the birds.I don't know what to call it....it was just "an irresistible eagerness of a teenager" or,perhaps "a teenager's curiosity"to see whether he could hit a target .I did not want to kill them.
