Play it Again, Sam #2b - "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"

I have to admit, this particular episode of Play it Again, Sam is yet another exercise in self indulgence. We are at #2b, the "cover" portion of today's discussion: Devo's cover of The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." While I dig many different genre's, it's really no secret that alternative music is my truest love. And it all started with Devo's appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1978, when they performed their version of the Stones' classic. The best covers, as far as I'm concerned, are the ones where a band takes a song and runs with it, making it their own. Basically, saying "We love this song, but check out what we do with it." Devo, with their unique, quirky style, were naturals at this. The band originally recorded the song in 1977, then rerecorded it in 1978 for their debut album. It was released as a single only after Mick Jagger listened and approved. It only reached #41 in the UK, and #98 in Australia, but damn, it certainly made an impression on me! Mick: "Hmmm. Kind of weird. But it should sell a few copies, which will grow mine and Keith's bank accounts."

That was really a surprise hit that kind of came out of nowhere. After "Whip It," you kind of started to expect songs like "Through Being Cool."

I haven't heard this one in a while! I didn't realize it was from way back then or that they did it on SNL.

Oh yes! It was this performance, along with the B-52's appearance right after, that sent my 12 year old self off in search of new wave records!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that surely you have heard their big hit, "Whip It," at some point.
