Another project almost done.

I'm finishing up another KLH Model 21 FM radio that I bought on Craigslist. I bought it for something like $60 and hope to sell it for about $150. It sounds fine, but wasn't in the greatest cosmetic shape when I bought it. These radios are from the late 1960s. The walnut wood they used for the cabinets got too expensive in the 1970s, and disappeared. If you find one of these at a garage sale or thrift store, snap it up. They are incredible pieces.

I have one that a friend of my husband gave us years ago. Walnut wood is still used a lot here, our woods are full of walnut trees.

@TheHorse I know that it is now illegal to export rosewood from Madagascar, they were chopping all the trees. Mahogany is an invasive species, they should be happy to use this wood.

I've seen a couple of walnut guitars recently. It seems that rosewood and real mahogany are getting rare.

@LadyDuck It's good wood for guitars. Has a more direct, less boomy, tone than rosewood. Rosewood is more expensive, though. Some people prefer it for its deep bass and higher volume (loudness).

It must be nice to know how to fix these up to resell at a profit. I've never looked for one at a thrift store. I try to stay out of such places now unless I'm dropping things off.

@TheHorse I think I'm almost immune to that now. It was different when I was still selling books or was still young enough to need to buy anything but food and necessities. Now it's time to shed things, not buy more.

Do you worry that you'd be tempted to bring stuff home?

Wow, FM only? I didn’t know they made such things back in the 60s (when AM ruled and FM was for classical music). What a find, indeed!

I think FM hit its zenith in the early 1970s. I remember that all of the "truly hop" rock stations were on FM in Chicago. WLS-AM played "top 40." WLS-FM played Emerson Lake and Palmer and Yes.

My father does the same thing you do. This one can be a collector’s item.

My friend Steve collects and restores old radios. He would probably love to see this one.

They have more aesthetic appearance than our modern gadgets. Really a piece to be admired.
