Our Conscience Asserts in Subtle Ways

Justice and Conscience

We come with a clear conscience but the ways of our world, the hypocrisy in society, make us deviate from the righteous path. When my conscience starts to prick, I realize nothing is more rewarding than abiding by my inner voice. We have to compromise to some extent to survive in a material world. We cannot please only ourselves but have to take care of our families. There is a subtle competition all the time with others and we are judged by our worldly possessions. Our lifestyle can then impinge on our conscience though I agree it is relative. Some live out their lives to enjoy the spread here without delving too much into analyzing the rights and wrongs. I am one who is subconsciously alive to my inner voice and I cannot go against its prompts. I have sacrificed in terms of worldly possessions to be true to myself all the time. I take a view all have similar feelings, hopes and fears and we are all just human despite the outward and superficial differences highlighted to divide us. I know most are like me, but would you share how you are able to balance the need to live comfortably and also stick with your conscience? Image: Justice and Conscience from Wikimedia Commons

When I listen to my conscience I fund that I am very comfortable and at peace. It is when I don't listen that I become uncomfortable. Did I understand the question correctly?

@db20747 I have quit jobs or not accepted jobs that tried to change the way I am and live. I always found another job and at times even better and that paid even more. God sees all and helps those that want to do what pleases him!

@1hopefulman Thanks for your response. Balancing our conscience and inner yearnings with the need to adjust to the expectations of family and society do not come easy. It is a challenge especially for those who are sensitive when they have to go against their conscience and inner voice - siva

It's admirable that U listen to your conscious!!! People change up quickly from knowing right from wrong when it comes to protecting their jobs.

Since I am always living uncomfortably, mostly merely surviving, I must always take care not to tread on others as I do so. Good thing I have a conscience at all.

Everyone has a conscience but some tend to overlook it. Tough times may make us ask "why me?" but sticking to the basics like treating others the way we like to be treated help us a lot to find peace of mind - siva

@Courage7 Such people may have had a conscience at one time but the mechanism got damaged along the way, maybe by their continually ignoring it.

@Shiva49 Years ago a psychiatrist told me that not everyone has a conscience as some do not feel guilt or empathy for fellow man.

I have been there and done that and that is I have thrown my inner voice to the winds but not any more. When wants do not exist and one's life is centred round one's needs there is no need for compromises or whatever.

@allknowing That is what I tell my wife; "when you buy, be prepared to discard/donate to find a place to store them". Also to remember those we have bought than just buy and forget - siva

That is right, I buy what is needed "now". Then the decision is easy. Better not accumulate those that can prove a mere burden for others. We have to finetune our lifestyle along the way and also manage the time we are left with - siva

Our conscience always takes us down the right path if we allow it to do so
Our conscience tries to keep us aligned to love, and to the righteous path. Love lives inside of you and flows out through you in various ways. One is through your mind, both conscious and unconscious aspects of it, and another way is through your heart, which connects to your conscience, which is a part of your soul placed there by God, connected to his love, via the part of God that you are, your soul. Conscience allows you to see God's point of view and tells you what is God's way for you to go in in any situation that will ever come up in your life. Conscience, no matter how cut off from you, by various aspects of yourself, always remains connected to you, and it can always be felt in some way, even in a subtle way sometimes, or more directly sometimes too. That Steve, you have said what is in my mind. The spark of creation from our creator is inside us. It is the ultimate guide. The universe is vast, beyond our imagination, but our inner knowing is also boundless. Just sit and allow our mind to wander without controlling our thoughts, then the journey takes us to who we really are, what it is about. We should not cut off the umbilical cord to our creator due to our ego and selfishness. When we listen with love and earnestness, we are on the right path all the time with the creator guiding us - siva

I'd rather live and sleep in peace than on a plush couch in huge mansion tossing around without peace. My husband and I have been through tough times when we started our life together some 25 years ago, and thankfully we value love, peace and honesty above everything else. I am so grateful that our boys are like us too. Material things don't really matter. They don't bring happiness, just temporary comfort.

@Shiva49 I have been in HR and I have seen the same thing going on there. The Bible says the love for money is the root of all evil. No wonder all religions preach charity. They know that is the only way to keep the human really human.

Having been in the finance field, I had seen how some were blinded by greed. I found the more money people had the more they wanted because wealth brings recognition in this material world. However, wealth enslaves us, our outlook etc. Balance is the key as life has to be savored in all its variety - siva

There will always be negatives in our life. I find joy and peace with my family and close friends. We are comfortable in our retirement and continue to give to worthy charities. I have always followed and listened to my conscience, and have empathy for those not as fortunate.

That is the way to live a fulfilling life. Work hard, get our priorities right, enjoy the fruits of our labor. Then the empathy and compassion towards the less fortunate are always in our hearts and minds - siva

It's good to have a conscience as it alerts us to right and wrong. It keeps us balanced on the right side. When it pricks, it lets me know I've erred on the wrong side and need to ask forgiveness of God.

I have trouble spending on frivolous items. For instance, I will go into a house at Christmas and wonder how many children could have been fed on the money it took to buy all the lavish decorations. Many of these people are very generous so it's not for me to say it's wrong. But I don't buy new decorations very year and I don't have many to start with. I don't buy goods I don't need and I never go 'shopping' just because I have nothing else to do. So I suppose that is my conscience telling me I don't need these things and the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Yes, we have a smoother ride when we give credence to our conscience than satisfying ourselves with "what the heck, everyone is doing the same". Though we have to play an active role as long as we can, I have subconsciously and seamlessly moved from one stage to another in life. At the back of my mind, I am always aware I am enjoying some bonus years, so it is all the more reason to stretch to the limit and leave a better world. Though I don't scrimp on necessities, I am more aware of what I spend on and not to add on to those that can prove a burden to others - siva

I think they are overcome and enamored by a material life and distanced from a spiritual life. If there is no balance in our lives, we will soon discover the path we pursued was devoid of meaning and fulfillment - siva
