From Transparent to Translucent

The front window in our garage was in need of a new shade as the original hung by the first owner of the house back in 1992 had begun to disintegrate. Much discussion ensued about with what we would replace the shade. My idea of simply spraypainting the window black was quickly vetoed by the missus who also warned me against suggesting spraypainting the window any other color. What we settled on was applying a translucent film to the window allowing light in but making it impossible to see the contents of the garage from outside. The film is available at Lowe's. It is fairly easy to install. And from what we can see thus far will do the trick nicely. Moving all the things piled up in the corner of the garage that blocked access to the window and then cleaning the area took longer than installing the film. The nice part of that is having a cleaner more organized garage now that we are done. Did you undertake any projects around the house today?

Finished moving our bedroom back to the bigger room. I agree with your wife on the paint.

LOL, she wouldn't let me paint over the window but now wants to paint the whole garage. I told her we'd call a friend of ours who is a professional house painter and see what he'd charge for the job. She's of the opinion we could do it ourselves. The ceiling in the garage is 15' high. We have a 4-foot stepladder.

@MALUSE She actually loves to paint, walls and such that is. However, her idea of what colors to paint rooms in a house she inherited from her father. He was color blind. She is not. But, having grown up with the garish colors he used, she favors and used the same. Myself, I don't much care. My parents always painted the rooms in our house some shade of white.

@DWDavis Walls are different from windows. I would probably like her choices. I even have a purple room here.

That sounds like a good plan. I've done nothing in the house since Thursday!

Because of what happened to the last shade we hung there, we wanted to try something different. I think the film will work out very well and now that we know how to install it, it will be easy to replace should the need arise.

With arthritis in my hands, I'm not a fan of physically demanding projects these days but the house must be kept up if we hope to sell it to help fund our nomadic lifestyle once we retire.

There were quite a number of different styles and shades of film. It took us several minutes of looking through the selection to agree on the frosted glass look we wound up with.

We do not have windows in our garage so I am happy about that. Translucent film is the best thing to do my friend has that on her garage windows.

A sign of how well I think it is going to work is that I didn't even notice it tonight when I came home from work. It just blends in.

Oh. You could have saved on the tidy-up by applying the film to the outside...

I"m afraid the elements would have made quick work of removing the film if I'd done that.

@DWDavis Yeah, I guess. A sand blaster might have made a more enduring impression on the outside...

We have been doing laundry all day, too. I still cannot figure out how just the two of us generate so much.

Not always. She wanted to also put film on the window on the back door of the garage. I had to remind her we often look out that door when we are working in the front yard with the main garage door open and want to check on the dogs when they are in the back yard.

There are certain projects I don't try anymore because the last time I did we wound up calling in a professional to fix what I'd tried to do myself.

@DWDavis It's best to call the professionals in times we don't really know what are we going to do.

Yes this film is also great in the bathroom if you have an outside window. No projects done here except vacuuming.

Both our bathrooms are upstairs and have small windows, but I may see if my parents want me to put some up for them. Right now they cover the window in their bathroom with aluminum foil and it blocks out the light.

Always nice to clear things out and organize and that film works great, did you have a hard time getting the air bubbles out of it.

I have a pattern film on my back window, which is huge and takes up the top half of the door.
