Day 68
Luke 16:18
Luke 16:18 Whosoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commits adultery: and whosoever marries her that is put away from her husband commits adultery.
Divorce statistics are high. People divorce for many reasons, unwilling to stick it out in the bad times.
Jesus told the people that anyone who divorced and remarried, committed adultery, and anyone who married a divorced person committed adultery. That’s pretty straight forward. It makes me wonder how many people have or are committing adultery.
God told Moses, people weren’t to commit adultery. It’s the seventh commandment.
Exodus 20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. (KJV)
Jesus told the people what constituted adultery.
Matthew 5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Adultery starts with a look. Jesus cited only one instance when people could divorce – unfaithfulness.
Matthew 5:31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causes her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced commits adultery.
God told Israel what he expected of them.
Malachi 2:14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.
15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.
16 For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hates putting away: for one covers violence with his garment, says the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
Paul spoke about the relationship between husband and wife.
1 Corinthians 7:10 And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:
11 But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.
12 But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believes not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.
13 And the woman which hath an husband that believes not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.
15 But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.
16 For what know thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? Or how know thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?
Divorce is not of God, but man and man has found many reasons for divorce.
Let’s pray: Father, you’ve shown through your Word, you hate divorce. You provided one means by which a person can divorce, fornication. Yet, Father, you showed me through your Word how much you love me, even when I divorced you in my heart. Draw me close to you and help me be faithful to you. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

It saddens me that there is such a high percentage of divorce.
