Neighbor's Dog is Barking

I love all animals. I love dogs. I have a new neighbor in one of the new homes behind me. They have a dog. A very cute dog. He is indoors all the time. Or so I thought. Every now and then they apparently let him out. They have no fence. I have a fence. Lately the dog is either let out or he gets out at night and barks all hours of the night and early morning. And barks. And barks. What to do. What to do.
I considered placing this anonymous note somewhere around their house but decided that wasn't such a good idea. The dog would probably see me and bark.
So, the question is, what would you do?

You could try introducing yourself and then kindly mention that the dog is keeping you awake.

I'm with Eva on this, Carol. If you introduce yourself first (maybe bring some cake or whatever), then you'll have a chance to assess what's the best way to broach the matter. Maybe they are real nice people who just don't realise what a nuisance their dog is being.

@wolfgirl569 That is probably the route I will take, always trying to be polite.

@NormanDarlo Yeah, taking the nice polite way should work. Fingers crossed.

That is a tough situation. I'm glad I'm not in your shoes or live in your neighborhood.

For a minute I thought you moved next to us
, but we have a fence and we keep her in the house at night so she does not bark all night. We do let her out sometimes in the middle of the night or early morning to go to the bathroom, but try to keep it as brief as possible because she can't keep her yapper shut.
To me, that neighbor does sound inconsiderate, usually we just confront in the nicest way possible.

@CarolDM People are amazingly ignorant to their own way of life sometimes is what I noticed.

@crossbones27 Ha! You know of the annoyance too.
No I am not in California. That is funny. Maybe the neighbor doesn't know...but how could they not know!

We had this problem with new neighbors, but I had nothing to do. Our closest neighbor is the Chief of the local police, he went there and told them to make the dog stop barking or they were going to take the dog away from him. This is how it works here. I would do what @wolfgirl569 suggests.

I think why the dog is barking because he saw something that he/she never see before,

@CarolDM yes, and I think much better if you have 1 lights on in the evening outside in your house. That's what I'm doing every night.

I am with Eva and Norman on this one too....I never had to deal with this kind of situation but that sounds like the best advice.

That is definitely a problem, but it is one that your neighbours need to solve. Dogs need exercise, and that is not satisfied by just letting them outside on brief occasions. If somebody is not prepared to treat a dog like a dog, which is an animal that loves to run and walk for considerable distances, then they shouldn't have one.
