Today is the day we scheduled to have the annual inspection of our house for termites. As wet as this fall has been, I'm more worried about us sinking into the aquifer than I am about termites. We've been having the house inspected every year since we moved in, though, and don't want to stop now. Earlier in the year, the problem was ants. Ants I can take care of myself. We also had a first time ever problem with water bugs (a type of large roach). I took care of them as well. Ditto the wasp nest on the front porch. Ditto the spiders in the garage. Termites are a whole other thing. I'll continue to let the experts take care of keeping them out of my house, thank you very much. Have you ever had a problem with termites or other types of insect pests and had to call in a professional?

That is sad to learn. I hope you were able to eliminate the termites and rebuild the closet.

@leny34 I hope throwing it out was the end of the termite problem.

I like spiders and tend to leave them alone. not sure about the other creepy crawlies. Don't think we get termites over here, pleased to say

I don't bother spiders I find outside the house, except wolf spiders-they drew first blood.

It is to avoid the unexpected that we have a yearly inspection. Termites are not something you want to discover when the floor gives way being your first clue.

When I lived in New England the problem was much more with carpenter ants and carpenter bees than with termites. Down here we have all three. Yipee!

@dwdavis an infestation of termites always spelled trouble in the houses we lived in in Africa. All other things were managable, but not termites.

We have to be ever on guard against termites here as they are present in the woods nearby due to the abundance of downed trees and branches. To date, we've been lucky to keep them away from the house.

The other bugs are a pest and nuisance but termites destroy.

And you never see termites doing the destruction until it is too late. Hence why we have an annual inspection.

No termites in the States. However, when I was on Guam they have termite season. It can be a bad problem. I found a way to control them, but I forget now, except it had to do with vinegar. I was sweeping them up every day.

Houses here have to have a termite barrier built in and before a house can be sold there has to be a certificate arranged that says the house is free of termites. They're hungry little sods, aren't they?

I discovered termites in our ceiling and some cabinets many years ago and I had pest control people come to get rid of them. For some years now, there has been no more termite intrusion into our house. I take a peep into the ceiling from time to time and there's no longer any termite presence. I think they can't stand the heat up there. I've stopped availing of pest control services though because their chemicals are too strong on the nose and I'm mindful of the neighbors who can smell the strong odor of the chemicals too. I just make sure to be observant of termite intrusion.
