Do your ears pop when going up a steep hill?

When we are driving in the countryside and going up a steep hill, my wife often says that her ears "pop". I think I know what she means, but I have to say that mine never do and never have done.
My question therefore is - is she unusual or am I? And what exactly is happening here?

Mine does when travelling or driving towards high altitudes such as a mountain vacation resort. My worst experiences were in the late 60 to early 70s when they used pre-WWII designed DC-3 planes that were non-pressurized at that time for inter-island travel because runways of some islands were too short for the newer jets. As a kid back then it would take a day or more to clear my ears so I could enjoy my travel vacation.
