Nautical Nonsense

Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, died yesterday (11/27). He was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) 19 months ago. Hillenburg majored in marine biology in college, but instead of applying it in an aquarium or university setting, he created the classic Nickelodeon cartoon. For a kids’ show there was some pretty grown-up jokes in SpongeBob SquarePants, such as the town name (Bikini Bottom). There was also the joke that probably only Hillenburg got: a sponge’s main enemy in the ocean is a starfish. Yet SpongeBob’s best friend was....a starfish. After being diagnosed with ALS Hillenburg said he would continue to work on SpongeBob SquarePants as long as his health would allow. Stephen Hillenburg was just 57. The SpongeBob theme song:
Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob Squarepants! The original SpongeBob Squarepants Theme Song. I am not in anyway affiliated with the creators...

I had not heard about his passing. Forgive me for asking this, but will he be buried in a pineapple under the sea?

Hopefully. And his wake will be at the Krusty Krab, not the Chum Bucket. (Oh, another joke I always loved in that show: Plankton’s wife’s name was Karen, which was also Hillenburg’s wife’s name.)

That has to be one of the worst diseases ever. Poor guy, struck down in his prime.

Whoa. Sad. That is so young. I liked SpongeBob as a kid, but I can totally see that it has humor that adults, not kids, are receptive to.

I'm really sorry to hear that. ALS is another cruel disease. I've always loved Sponge Bob, just such a clean, silly show.

That is so sad that he was only 57. However I've never seen any of his work.

There are many hidden messages, double meanings and symbolisms in that cartoon, Bikini bottom could be referring to Bikini Atoll and those creatures could be a product of mutation due to years of nuclear testing, its just an example, there are a lot more crazy theories and interpretations, we would never know the truth now that the creator is gone.
