How I Stopped Smoking

It just occurred to me one day that I hated smoke and I just choke if I sniff a cigarette. I used to smoke when I was in my twenties, the time when the No- Smoking Campaign was not as popular .This was when I was still working in the big city. When I decided to come back home I also resolve to totally quit smoking. I started to cut on the number of sticks to just 2 sticks a day, down to only 1 stick a day. Then I tried to stop for 1 week, then 2 weeks. On the third week ,I cannot take it anymore. I choke and I just cannot take it anymore. How about you do you smoke? do you have plans of quitting? or had you stopped smoking.

If one has strong desire, he will succeed.

I don’t smoke but my husband and two of my daughters do. I want them to stop but smoking is like breathing for them. They just cannot quit. My husband had been advised by the doctor to stop smoking but he’s always looking for reasons not to stop smoking. I already gave up on him. He can never quit smoking.

@florelway I know it’s willpower. If they want to quit smoking, it’s because they want to and not because of me or anything external. I have a friend whose husband used to smoke but he successfully stopped and he told me that it must be the smoker himself who wants to quit and not because he’s pressured by someone else.
I cannot push my children or my husband to stop smoking. When they’re not smoking, they get really and easily irritable. I hate that. I leave it up to them. If they want to poison themselves, that is their choice. Life is a choice.

@florelway The thing is with smokers is that they know their habit is not good for them. They’ve seen the pictures and they’ve read stories about lung cancer and throat cancer but they don’t care. This is the problem with people who are addicted. The problem is to solve their addiction. Smoking is just a symptom of this addiction. I think if we can help solve their addiction problem, perhaps we can help them quit smoking.

@UmiNoor just don't stop hoping and thinking that one day they will realize it's for their own good.

That is a great way how you stopped. I tried a pipe once. I was married to someone that smoked and hated it. I do not smoke. I am glad you quit. I always hate smelling the smoke from someone that does smoke.

Thanks for explaining that it is secondhand smoke. Yes it is harmful but the smokers do not care.

Yes you should encourage him because you are also inhaling second hand smoke and it's as bad or worse than direct smoking.
