Let Me Ask You A Question

OR
I have something to ask you.
OR
Can I ask you something?
OR
May I ask you something?
OR SIMPLY :
Question?
All of these give me anxiety. Does it do the same for you? Ok, maybe "May I ask you a question?" gives me the least bit of anxiety, but otherwise? You get my heart to pumping when you use any of those phrases.
Please, Please just ask the question and don't ask me if you can ask. Doing that makes me worry, especially if you delay in asking me whatever you wanted to ask.

Yes. I am like that too. Just ask the question already and don't preface it with the anxiety inducing prelude question.

Most of the time the question ends up being lighthearted or easy, but those few seconds has my mind going through every possibility.
I hate the most when an employer says that. "Can I ask you a question?", you know it's probably going ot be about staying late / coming in / doing an extra task but it's still terrifying.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Its almost like they intentionally try to intimidate you with that first question. It is unnecessary and quite irritating.

@cindiowens Exactly, that first question either puts people on their guard or pushes people off their guard. It's not fair, and like you said very unnecessary.
Now, there is the case where a person asks "Can I ask you a question?" because they are unsure of themselves or the situation. Those cases I can understand a little more than others. However, I personally say "I'd like to ask you a question, if that's alright?" because I think it's less anxiety filled.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It is stressing to have someone asking if they may ask a question.

Oh that too! Like when they are afraid or too shy to ask. I can understand that they might be too shy but you have to be able to follow through with the question if your going to ask someone if you can ask them something.

@JustBhem exactly! I always feel as if maybe I've done something wrong and that is what the question is about.

@ScribbledAdNauseum
And that makes us anxious, right? Thinking what could it be.

So if someone says "Can I ask you a question?" before asking the question.. It doesn't bother you?

Same here! I'm glad there are others that don't like when people start a conversation that way.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Exactly, it just causes un-needed stress! Just go ahead and ask!

? I don't get anxiety exactly, but I do wish they would hurry it along . . . it's not efficient
