We were in Emporia, Kansas the other night. They have an all veterans park. Emporia is the home of the Veteran's Day celebrations in the United States. I regret that it was dark and cold as we did not stay long. This image is one of the pieces in the park There are many artifacts, such as tanks, and trucks. An anchor from a ship. The new thing we had not seen are black granite walls with the names of all who enlisted in all the wars from the Flint Hills Area. That is the region where we live and where Emporia is. There is so much history to be learned. My heart felt burdened for a list of three names (perhaps brothers?) who served in the same war. Each was in a different branch of service. When we go back, I will make notes and I will look things like that up to learn the background. This makes history come alive for me. It will not be so long this next time before we go back. In the daylight.

History is so much better to learn that way.

This is a place you and your family would really enjoy. It is also just across the road from a small, free zoo.

Some of our war memorials in our very small towns will have anything from three to six people all with the same surname. So, although not siblings, they are bound to have been related.

My husband had family members that all enlisted under the same name.Arnold was the dad and was still young enough to enlist, Vietnam, I think. His son lied about his age, used his name and enlisted in another branch and Arnold's younger brother also enlisted using his name. I believe that there are laws now about how many siblings from a family can be active duty in war time.

@GardenGerty That would be a good law. How awful to lose all your menfolk.

Places like that make us stop and realize how much freedom meant to our ancestors, they fought for us, generations that were not even born yet. We should never ever take that for granted. We went to a cemetery today, it broke my heart when I had to turn and leave. I'm not one to visit places like that, they do me no good.

There is a lot of history right in your own town. My heart was burdened in Oahu reading the list of men killed on the U.S. Arizona and at the 3000+ souls in Prague killed by the Nazis. Every inch of the walls were covered by names.

Yes, I believe I read on Facebook that if we were to take a moment of silence for each victim of the Holocaust we would be silent for eleven years. Heart breaking.

@GardenGerty Wow! I’m not surprised, but put in those terms, it is mind boggling. And to think that there are those that don’t believe the Holocaust happened!

It was not too bad, but there was a breeze. We had a nice warm car to get back into.
