The eagle, among the greatest of the birds of prey, was seen as the king of the air as much as the lion was seen as the king of the jungle and African plains. The eagle became a powerful symbol of might and reach, a symbol of the Roman legions, a potent heraldic shield motif popular in Italy, Germany, Russia and France, a symbol of America (the Bald Eagle), and much more. The eagle was popular with British noble families who had seen the symbol abroad especially when serving on military campaigns, including the Crusades. The Chorlton pub sign captures an eagle swooping down, fierce expression, wings spread back and mountains in the background.
