What would a world without religion be like?

In his famous song "Imagine", John Lennon includes - as part of his idea of perfection - a world "with no religion too". Given that religion has caused millions of unnecessary deaths down the centuries, one might think that this would be a good plan.
Speaking for myself, as somebody brought up in a church-going household but who is now a convinced atheist, I cannot see how my life is in the slightest bit diminished by having rejected religion. I am clearly not alone, seeing how the proportion of people professing a religious belief has been going down for decades - in the western world at least.
But what would the world be like if all religions disappeared tomorrow? Would it be the case that there was "nothing to kill or die for" in Lennon's words? Would it be a better world or a worse one?

@indexer Alas there are those who subscribe to such nonsense because that way they get to do whatsoever pleaseth them without the nuisance of a guilty conscience. The more theologically sane way to look at it of course is that according to the Genesis accounts God made everything good and it was Adam and Eve’s job to look after it rather than to abuse God’s handiwork. However too many choose their theology to suit their needs rather than adapting their behaviour to suit their God and I’m sure I’m as guilty as the rest.

There are some religious people who claim that global warming is a myth because God will come to the rescue before it gets too bad. We do not therefore need to do anything in terms of protecting the planet. That is the sort of religious garbage we could definitely do without.
