Day 37 John 20:1-10 John 20:1 The first day of the week came Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher, and saw the stone taken away from the sepulcher. 2 Then she ran, and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid him. 3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulcher. 4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulcher. 5 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. 6 Then came Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulcher, and saw the linen clothes lie, 7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. 8 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulcher, and he saw, and believed. 9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home. What do you do when you see something extraordinary? Peter and John ran to the tomb when Mary Magdalene told them the stone no longer covered the tomb. When they arrived, they saw the linen cloth they wrapped Jesus in for burial, and they saw the napkin that covered his face, lying separate from the burial cloth, and didn’t understand what it meant, and went home, but only one believed, John. As Christians, you know the most significant event in history occurred, Jesus rose from the dead, completing yours and my salvation. Consider the scene that met the disciples when they looked in the tomb. They saw the linen cloth lying wrapped without a body, and the napkin that covered Jesus’ face separate from the burial cloth wrapped, or folded by itself. John understood what it meant, and believed Jesus had risen. He knew when a person ate a meal and stepped aside, he folded his napkin, showing those around him, he would return. Jesus told the world with the folded napkin, He would return. We have the hope of Jesus’ return when He will set up His kingdom on earth and defeat Satan in the final battle and cast him into the lake of fire and brimstone, never to tempt mankind again. Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 And out of his mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. 17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; 18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. 19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. 20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. 21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. It will be a glorious day when Jesus returns and defeats Satan, and we will live with Him for eternity in His kingdom. Let’s pray: Father, thank you for showing me Jesus will return and defeat Satan in the final battle. Help me live with the hope of Jesus’ return as I live to do Your will. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Copyright © 8 January 2019 by Valerie Routhieaux Image courtesy of Pixabay
