Day 39
John 20:19
John 20:19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and said unto them, Peace be unto you.
20 And when he had so said, he showed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.
21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
27 Then said he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
29 Jesus said unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
What does it take for you to believe what people tell you? With every known scam in the world today, it’s hard to believe anything unless we see it with our own eyes. Nothing is taken at face value. The saying, if it’s too good to be true, it usually isn’t, is usually the case.
However, when it came to the resurrection of Jesus Christ, what the disciples told Thomas was true, and he saw Jesus alive when He stood in the midst of them in a locked room.
Thomas went to India to preach the good news of salvation and never doubted again.
As Christians, you have the gospels to tell you the story of salvation. John was an eyewitness to everything Jesus said and did, and he said more could be written about Jesus, but what he wrote proves Jesus is the Son of God.
John was the only apostle who died a natural death. Nothing could kill him. He was boiled in oil. Flayed. And exiled to the isle of Patmos by Emperor Domitian where he wrote the book of Revelation, a prophesy given to him directly from Jesus Christ about what is still to come. After his exile, John was the bishop of Ephesus until his death in 100 A.D.
These are written. John showed the life and death of Jesus Christ, as did Matthew, Mark, and Luke. He showed the deity of Jesus as the Son of God. Many books have been written about Jesus. However, the gospels stand as the authority as they are eyewitness accounts of what took place during Jesus lifetime. Events corroborated by Josephus and other historians of that time.
Many people tried to disprove the gospels and the Bible, but none have been able to with the proof leading to their salvation. Josh McDowell wrote the book Evidence that Demands a Verdict. He was a college student and an atheist given a dare by his peers to prove the Bible wasn’t true and full of errors, he became a Christian and is a pastor and teacher. The Case for Christ, written by Lee Strobel a newspaper reporter for the Chicago Tribune was an atheist and did everything he could to disprove the Bible and couldn’t. He also is a pastor and teacher today and his story was also made into a movie, The Case for Christ a couple years ago. It shows the lengths he went to prove Jesus wasn’t real, and couldn’t do so. The more he dug into Jesus’ life and ministry, the more he proved Jesus was real and not myth.
What will it take for you to believe Jesus is the Son of God as portrayed in the gospels? Has someone dared you?
Let’s pray: Father, thank you for sending Your Son, Jesus, to be my Savior. Thank you for opening my understanding so I might believe. Continue to open my understanding as I study Your Word. Draw me close to You so my life is a reflection of You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
