Day 40
John 21
John 21:1 After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise showed he himself.
2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.
3 Simon Peter said unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
5 Then Jesus said unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.
6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher’s coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.
8 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.
9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
10 Jesus said unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, a hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.
12 Jesus said unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? Knowing that it was the Lord.
13 Jesus then came, and took bread, and gave them, and fish likewise.
14 This is now the third time that Jesus showed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
15 So when they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, love thou me more than these? He said unto him, Yea, Lord; thou know that I love thee. He said unto him, Feed my lambs.
16 He said to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, love thou me? He said unto him, Yea, Lord; thou know that I love thee. He said unto him, Feed my sheep.
17 He said unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, love thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Love thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou know all things; thou know that I love thee. Jesus said unto him, Feed my sheep.
18 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou was young, thou girded thyself, and walked whither thou would: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou would not.
19 This spoke he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he said unto him, Follow me.
20 Then Peter, turning about, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayed thee?
21 Peter seeing him said to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?
22 Jesus said unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou me.
23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
24 This is the disciple which testifies of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
Everyone wants proof about what people tell them. No one accepts what people tell them except with proof.
The disciples fished all night without a catch, yet when Jesus told them to cast the net to the other side, they caught so many the net almost broke. John told Peter it was Jesus and Peter dove into the sea and went to shore to talk with Him. After they dined on fish and bread, Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved Him. Peter declared his love for his Lord. Jesus told him to feed his sheep and lambs.
As Christians, you know the number of times Jesus asked Peter if he loved Him is in direct proportion to the number of times Peter denied Him. Jesus wanted Peter to know how much He loved him and told him the type of death he would glorify God.
Peter was hung upside down on a cross. He refused to die in the same manner as Jesus, not feeling worthy of the same crucifixion.
How much do you love Jesus? Are you willing to feed the lambs and sheep of the world? Before Jesus returned to heaven, He gave His disciples the great commission to go into the world teaching and baptizing in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus’ commission is mine and your commission. When you go and tell, you are feeding God’s flock and pointing the way of salvation to a hungry world.
Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Jesus also told Peter, John would tarry. John confirmed what Jesus told Peter, not that he wouldn’t die, but that he would see Jesus return. Which he did when John wrote the book of Revelation of Jesus Christ on the isle of Patmos. The final prophecy regards the last seven years of tribulation and Jesus’ return and victory over Satan. After which John returned as bishop of Ephesus and died in 100 A.D. He was the only apostle to die a natural death.
What are you willing to do for Jesus?
Let’s pray: Father, give me a hunger to feed your lambs and sheep, to tell those who don’t know You how much You love them and don’t want to see anyone perish but all come to the knowledge of the truth, accepting You as Savior and Lord. Give me boldness to preach and teach Your Word. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
