Are You People For REAL?

My wife and I are transplants to southern Illinois (near St. Louis) from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and it will simply NEVER get old to us when snow falls here and people just literally go nuts. For us, it is like a comedy that never ends. For whatever reason, when snow falls in southern Illinois people just PANIC. It's like the end of the world has just been announced or something. Gas lines look like a throw back to the Carter Administration back in the 1970's, and stores empty out as though Armageddon has just been announced to be a very real and imminent thing. We got about 8 inches of snow last night and into this morning, and this is just ONE shelf at our local grocery store when we visited to do our normal weekend grocery shopping. I had several other pictures but of course could only pick one for this post. People literally wiped the store clean of lettuce, green peppers, potatoes, meat, lunch meat, cheese, eggs, bread, milk, flour... Even the Parmesan cheese was gone and so was the vegetable oil. I swear to you. The ENTIRE case of frozen pizzas were completely wiped out. There was not a single frozen pizza to be found in the store. They even wiped out the brownies in a box, and a display of blueberry muffins. Granted, our area gets an average of 17 inches of snowfall a year, and so 8 inches in a day is a major "event" for these people. But REALLY people? Really? You had to wipe out the VEGETABLE OIL? I am sorry to say but my wife and I simply cannot stop laughing. It's just too funny to us. When you are used to sometimes 200 inches of snowfall in a year, you just wonder how these people would EVER survive in Wisconsin. Let alone Buffalo, New York or Alaska for that matter. You cannot make this crap up.

Do you find that because people go mad and buy up everything that you have to stock more than you would otherwise do?

i wonder if they get to use up everything they hurriedly stocked up on or they get eventually tossed in the trash.

@JudyEv which is like throwing money away. if they bought it on credit, then it's like paying for something that you didn't even get to use.

I would probably be like that, being raised in California we get snow in Mississippi but rarely, so I know how they feel.

I get what you're saying, but just be thankful you don't live in NC. At the third snowflake, I'm not kidding, all the schools close, all government buildings close, and the shelves in Walmart have NOTHING left. Heaven help us if we ever have a real snow storm.

It is pretty funny how different areas react to snow. I'm used to snow and usually have enough handy in case we can't get out for a day. Your picture is quite funny and I did get a laugh at the vegetable oil. Why vegetable oil??? Does it melt the snow?? Normally the shelves are empty of bread, milk, snacks and toilet paper

That is simply hilarious! I'm laughing just looking at that picture. I don't think I've ever seen the shelves empty out except for the Super Bowl because you know, no one is going anywhere on Super Bowl Sunday.

@porwest Imagine what they would do if they had the storm we're getting now. It started snowing a half hour ago.

@porwest I should take my camera with me to Wal-Mart next time I go, which should be right about Super Bowl time. It would probably be a good time to go shopping since everyone would be glued to their TVs. Though, I wonder if there would be food left on the shelves.

Around here they just buy all of the bread, milk, and eggs. The liquor stores get some good business too.

I can understand tornadoes, hurricane, warnings but a bit of snow should not lead to panic

I cannot relate to the snow experience you have there.

Does the snowfall affect day to day services, so people hoard.

Wow, that is crazy! We are used to the snow here, so I have never seen a store wiped out like that!
