How often do you take a break from your screen?

People who do the most work are not the most productive. People who take frequent breaks - especially if their work consists of sitting in front of a computer screen - not only work more effectively but have better health and less stressful lives. Experiments have been done that show that the best work pattern consists of standing up and moving around for about one minute in every 20 or 30. You should also take an extended break of 10 to 15 minutes every hour or so, and use that break time doing something completely different, such as walking outside the building or a short session of yoga or meditation. However, I have known plenty of bosses who would take a very dim view of their employees downing tools like this on a regular basis. They would take a lot of persuading in terms of showing how work quality has improved as a result! The other side of this coin must be that the time spent doing the work is fully concentrated on the work and not on any else. Fair's fair, after all!

I'm sure the research is correct but like you, I can see bosses taking a dim view of such breaks.

They need educating - the best way would be to make them follow a similar work pattern and judge for themselves if their work efficiency has improved.

@indexer It might be difficult to talk them into doing that however.

I usually get up every 30 minutes and go to do something different. It's good for the eyes, but also for the neck and the back.

Oh at least every 20 or so. 20 minutes that is John. I truly cannot sit for very long.
