When Did Clowns Go Bad and Why Do They Get Such A Bad Rap?

When I was in my teens way back when. I was very fortunate to go to the Ringling
Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
I remember seeing all the clowns and how they made everyone laugh. They would come up to the audience and make us smile.
My Question is: In what year or what time did that change?
When did clowns become the bad guys?

70's party rental clowns are probably to blame ultimately.most of them were drunk,and even worse some were john wayne gacy,a serial killer.

The serial killer and rapist John Wayne Gacy probably tarnished the image of the clown plus the numerous subsequent movies that came out based on his life. Some children also have a natural fear for clowns
