The link below explains the difference, with a little bit of the reason-why that difference MAKES a difference to me. Do YOU ever use one when you mean the other? I can think of a few times I probably said 'my spirit is with you' or 'the spirit of a long-dead elder was with me,' when I probably meant something more like "my soul shines brightly & provides a good example for you (like my elders' souls did back in their day)."

Spirit is the essence or breath of life or love, whereas soul is the solidified spirit, present within each constructed member of that life. Soul is part of truth. Spirit is the messenger of truth. Spirit is love. Love that connects soul to soul, and truth to truth. Love comes from God, and spirit is God sending love out to all souls. Spirit is God's messenger of love, and more than just bringing a message, spirit is the vehicle carrying God's love to all souls. Spirit is God's own thoughts.

I first learned it as 'God breathed' (Spirit) into 'the clay' (body), and the man became a living soul. When you stop living, your soul ceases to exist (and the spirit is released).

@mythociate Yes, in Genesis in the Bible, it says this: Genesis 2:7 (King James Version) "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." Yes, this agrees with you that the spirit is the breath of life. This says though that man became a living soul. To me, this implies that there are non-living souls too. Maybe God has a cupboard full of non-living souls, or seeds, as the Parable of the sower says, and they come to life, once they are clothed in flesh, and spirit animates them into life.

@innertalks In the Parable of the Sower, the seed was The Word (the Good News that Jesus taught while He was still alive). And the "living soul"-translation (not used in most translations) was 'added' ... the original text means 'living being, life, self, person, desire, passion, appetite, emotion.'
