Nobody else can spell that

I was discussing where we lived in a secret group on FB. The person who started the conversation wants to move from where she is living - Florida - to some place else. I threw my 2 cents in, but didn't think she would want to trade Florida's heat and humidity (and hurricanes) for Texas' heat and humidity and occasional tornadoes. However, while reading some of the other people's responses, one mentioned living in New Jersey for a while. I responded that I was born there and that my folks lived there, including moving from where I was born - East Orange - to be closer to Mom's folks in Piscataway. The person told me that "And you have proven you lived in NJ because nobody else can spell "Piscataway"." I didn't mention that I had to look it up, but I could spell it close enough that I could find it and only had 1 letter wrong in my spelling. And not only couldn't I spell when we left New Jersey, I wasn't even talking yet! Still, I pretty much know more about New Jersey than the average Texan because I was born there, visited many times in my childhood and, apparently, still sound more like a "yankee" to the Texans around me than a Texan.

That happens all over the place, but more so where the Europeans and Amerind didn't necessarily have initial hostile interactions. (This is said by someone descended from a woman who was attacked by Natives in south Jersey when her ship was shipwrecked on the way to New Amsterdam.)

I have visited both Texas and Florida and I think I would pick up Florida should I be obliged to find a place where to live.

I wouldn't know, I've never been to Florida. However, she indicated that she wanted to live somewhere that had mountains and seasons. Well, there are places in Texas with mountains and others with some semblance of seasons, but... not really at the same time... I think she was looking more toward Tennessee or Colorado. My sister loves living in Tennessee and my brother and his daughter lived in Colorado for a while - they are both here in town now since Texas, even AUSTIN, is easier to live in without a state income tax.

@LadyDuck West Texas has mountains and the Panhandle has seasons - mostly summer and dust but they do have seasons...

@ElicBxn Florida is flat, to have mountains and season I would not go to Texas.

Have you spelled it correctly in your discussion?

Yes, I returned to that discussion to get the quote and the spelling. If I hadn't done that, I would've looked it up again, but I kind of gave myself a way to spell it right then, I really went back for the quote. "Pis-cat-away" kind of like chasing a cat away - not that I ever do that...

My fiance lives in NJ. He lives in Mountainside. He doesn't sound like a yankee.

My wife was born in Texas and lived most her life here, but doesn't always sound like a Texan - east or west. That's because she was an Air Force Brat and also watched a lot of TV, and a lot of British TV at that.

The record in Austin is 112ยบ F. The summer of 2011 we had 79 days of 100+ in a row. That blasted past the previous record from 1925 of 69 days. I'm sure glad we have air conditioning now.
