Whenever we get a bit of snow here in the south of England, things can grind to a halt pretty quickly, and everyone moans about how ridiculous this is and how any other country would just get on with things and not let a bit of snow stop them.
This week though, even Minnesota (where I once lived), in the middle of the north American continent and which is renowned for its cold winters, has been hit hard by seriously cold weather (we’re talking minus 40 C) and various services have been cancelled.
It seems that in spite of this some schools have chosen to put a positive spin on things – have a look at this:
EPIC SNOW DAY ANNOUNCEMENT: To announce a snow day, these school officials sang their own rendition of "Hallelujah" – and their voices will blow you away! ?? | CHECK MINNESOTA CLOSINGS:...

I watched this video the other day and think it is absolutely terrific. Having worked outside in temps of -40C/-40F (Yay, they are the same), I can understand why they would close the schools for such cold.
Here in eastern NC, the public schools haven't closed for cold as yet, but they sometimes have a two-hour delay if the temperature or wind chill is below 10F/-12C

Schools have been closed here, not because of the cold as such but because of ice. Since it is nowhere near as cold over here we often get temperatures fluctuatig around freezing, so snow melts during the day but then freezes overnight so first thing in the morning the roads (and pavements/sidewalks) can be very dangerous.

That was great! Our kids were out of school for two days here too.
