Do You Take A Multivitamin?

What's your opinion on taking multivitamins? Are they an effective way to maintain your health?
Interestingly, in the area of heart health, multivitamins do not lower the risks of heart disease. In a study done by Circulation Magazine, research concluded that multivitamins provided no benefit to cardiovascular health.
Then do these results make multivitamins overrated? Do we need to take a supplement which contains so many different kinds of vitamins and minerals in each dosage? What's you opinion?

@dgobucks226 We are both Italian and we naturally follow a classic Mediterranean diet.

@LadyDuck Diets high in fruits and vegetables and substituting natural olive oil over fatty butter is definitely a good thing

I agree in that approach especially if you feel healthy. In my opinion I think their is no better substitute for the combos of nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and fiber found in natural foods.

I took some for a few months and never saw a difference either in my life or my medical updates. I think taking some specialty vitamins if you need them is a good thing.

Yes, exactly what I do. I have an iron deficiency which showed up on a blood test and take both iron and B6 as supplements. If someone is otherwise healthy taking a multivitamin may actually be harmful because our bodies only need vitamins in tiny amounts. Although I do agree those with an inadequate diet or special nutritional needs can be helped by a multivitamin.

I feel as though multivitamins are over rated. If you eat properly you should get enough of the vitamins that you need through your food.
It's no surprise to me that in heart health, the researchers found using heart health targeted multivitamins provide no benefit. I always felt pushing multivitamins was one of big pharma's way to make us think we are doing something good but in reality it is of no value, yet they are getting rich.

I see your points and I agree. Only if one suffers from a unique vitamin deficiency should they supplement their diet, however taking a multivitamin may actually be harmful because our bodies only need vitamins in tiny amounts.

I am not healthy. I cannot remember why I do the vitamin D drops. Maybe because I need a lot of vitamins in me.

I can't remember how vitamin D helps your body? Why do you use them in your diet?
What I worry about is If someone is otherwise healthy taking a multivitamin may actually be harmful because our bodies only need vitamins/minerals in tiny amounts.

I don't know that they help me or harm me, but either way, I take a multi every single day either way. For whatever that is worth. I do seem to know if I stop taking vitamins I notice it, but that could just as easily be a placebo effect.

However, I do agree that those with an inadequate diet or special nutritional needs can be helped by a multivitamin. I take vitamin C which helps with the immune system and I have a iron deficiency so I take a pill for that.
My worry is receiving to much of a vitamin I don't need in my body.
Appreciate your feedback Jim

@porwest Yes, that is my experience too. I would think it could also harm your liver or other body organs.

@dgobucks226 The way vitamins work, if you take in too much you just pee it out.

I no longer take them as I don't think they work but that is only my opinion. Better to get the vitamins from our food. It seems more natural.

But if you feel better with multivitamins you should take them. I do take vitamin C for it's benefits.

I think its probably a good idea, but I mistrust those tablets that are like hard packed chalk. I don't take one but sometimes I take a gel cap of vitamin D

@dgobucks226 Ah, it is in a lot of foods. Here I take it, esp. in winter for immune support - since we aren't getting it from sun exposure right now lol

Lots of natural foods I eat contain vitamin D. Some examples are: Orange juice, cereal, bread, and some yogurt brands, eggs, fish, cheese and of course milk. So, I figure for me, I'm getting enough Vitamin D. What do you take vitamin D for?
