Random thoughts on musicians’ agents

We live in the south-west of Western Australia. We have another outside concert coming up in a month. Many of the musicians we deal with don’t have agents but some do. In general, the agents seem very casual. A group should be able to leave all the organisation to their agent but in some cases they’d do well to pay more attention to what’s being planned for them. Example No 1: A group came out from Ireland and their (Australian) agent originally had them playing in Albany, Perth, Esperance then Kalgoorlie on consecutive nights. The distances are 414 kms (257 miles), 714 kms (443 miles) and 390 kms (242 miles). Luckily things got changed around into a more logical and easier sequence. Example No 2: We run ‘house’ concerts. If we deal directly with a group, they get the money from the ‘gate’ or ticket sales less our expenses. We don’t try to make money from these concerts. If there is an agent involved, they are not usually happy with this arrangement but prefer a flat fee. One soloist came to us through an agent and we discovered he was playing for a pittance, much less than if he’d taken the ticket sales. We ended up giving him extra. Example No 3: We’ve had several really top-class groups from overseas. These were found additional gigs by their agents but mostly in totally inappropriate venues. One group played in a pub next to a noisy public bar, trying to compete with rock music on one side and a football match on the other. So if any of you ever turn into class acts and have agents, be careful who you choose. The photo is of the Bombadils from Canada in the playground in Donnybrook. I might write about them separately.

There is no reason why for concerts such as yours there should ever be agents.

If they have an agent they are tied to them.

You have people coming from so many countries to attend your concert. How do they know?

I'm not sure if you're asking a question or being rhetorical. If a group has to book while they're still overseas it would be difficult for them to choose wisely.

@JudyEv It was a question, how the musicians who come to play at your shack know about this?

@LadyDuck Mostly the overseas ones play at Fairbridge Music Festival and we often chat to them there if we can. Sometimes we hear that they are appearing in Perth and if we think we'd suit each other we will get in touch with them. Very occasionally lately, they hear of us somehow and get in touch to see if they can perform here.

Some are just in it for what they can make from it.

Sounds like getting paid your way is better for the musician than through their agents. Looks like the gal in the middle was smart to take her shoes off. They're having a lot of fun.

@just4him They think too that there is a risk in case not a lot of people turn up. But that hasn't happened yet.

Mostly it is but of course the agents don't want them to do that.

Those groups were strangers where they went to play ,thus the agents sought unfair gain from their performances.

Yes, that's true and it's sad that they would try to profit in this way.

You do have some interesting concerts. How did you get into doing this in the first place?

We attended a few near here when we first arrived and thoroughly enjoyed them, Then those people moved and we thought we could fill the gap. And it went on from there.

Mostly we don't need to haggle. What they want upfront is usually less than we expect to get so it just means a bit more in our pocket. It helps pay for the outlay for lights etc. Or course, they think they are taking a bit of a risk in case we don't get a good number attending but it hasn't happened yet.

I have heard similar stories like this from many people who are in the music industry. They work hard but their agents make way more money then they do.
