No matter what your feelings are about war, armed conflict, guns, etc., there is no denying that those members of any armed force who fight for their country are heroes.
All give something and many give everything.
The photograph you see here is the Royal Marines Commando memorial. Placed on a hillside above the highland village of Spean Bridge its location was chosen to reflect the tough training these men endured to serve their country.
The mountains in this photograph were their training area and playground. I never pass this way without stopping to pay my respects not only to these men but to war heroes everywhere no matter which side they were on.

Heroism come in many forms. The sad thing about war is we glorify it in movies and demagogues use "patriotism" for selfish motives. Do we really honor war veterans by awarding them medals and building monuments to their sacrifices but neglecting their well fare after they no longer are useful to the State?
Consider also that in an armed conflict, some are called "freedom fighters" and the opposing side"terrorists". Who are the "heroes"? That would depend on whose side you're on.

@josie_ I don't believe it matters if they fight for a country, a cause, a particular leader or any other reason. The very fact that they are willing to put themselves in harms way is enough to call them heroes. Veterans should be recognised by being awarded medals but they should also be rewarded by being treated well by their government. Sadly, this rarely happens.
You are right in saying that heroes come in many forms. A police officer who puts his life on the line to protect an innocent person or the ordinary citizen who steps in to stop an assault on a helpless woman are all heroes and I take my hat off to all of them

We have some great memorials to our gallant soldiers too. This one commemorates the Australian Light Horse in particular. It's in Albany on WA's south coast. Most of those who went to WWI left from Albany so this coast would be, for many, their last glimpse of Australia.
