I don't understand this Generic thing any more

When the stores started putting out products that were "generic" it was said this stuff was the exact thing as the brand products. and only cheaper because no fancy labels had to be on it.. 9 out of ten times it was just as good. Then came generic drugs, Over the counter ones do seem to be just the same mostly too. But now prescribed medicine comes in generic also which makes it hard to know why? They don't label it any different but the doctor calls it a different thing. My doctor said she was giving me Singular to help with breathing. So when daughter went to the pharmacy she picked up what they gave her which was called Montelukast So I of course thought it was something else. Come to find out it is the generic for Singular. So if it is just as good and the same, why bother giving it a different name. So confusing for a lay person such as myself. Makes you wonder what they are trying to pull. So, now when they ask me are you still taking this or that? a person sometimes wonders Am I and just don't know. Any idea? Photo here is me and my 2 daughters hamming it up on the couch trying to get a photo we all agree is good when the oldest came to visit us. We had a great time, but as soon as she went back home, she started hating me again for no particular reason Still don't know what gets into her. She is the dark haired one.

Most of the time, generics seem to work as well as brands for me. But my husband has a chronic eye condition and has to take three different kinds of eye drops. Two are generics and work fine, but one of them has to be the brand name (and expensive!) one. He tried the generic and his eye got worse, so we have to buy the brand name one. But it's worth it if it keeps him from losing his eye (and not just his vision.) Cute photo, hope things get better there.

@1creekgirl I took Zoloft for years for depression. When they came out called Sertraline my insurance wouldn’t cover the name brand so I had to take Sertraline for a few years and it was horrible. It was only about 10% as effective as the Zoloft.

thanks me too. @1creekgirl sometimes I too think generics aren't working right for me. I have one inhaler that gets expensive co-pay at the beginning of each year but still pay it and do without other things because it is all that works and if you can't breathe nothing else matters.

Same here, which is which I wonder. Most often, for simple stuff, we just bought the generic.

@bunnybon7 The moment I got used to some generic stuff, the same chemist would tell me, '' ah, there is a more generic one which is cheaper... " (I give up really with this generic thing!)

I'm not exactly sure why, but most insurance companies would rather pay for the generic brands due to them being less expensive.. Such pretty girls you have, and such a shame that your dark haired daughter acts like that towards you.

My mom and I have wondered the same. As most of my medicine is generic instead of the name the doctor tells me. But they always say its the pharmacy that decides which you get. Unless your doctor puts 'not generic' on the scirpt. So who knows. Sorry about your daughter.

you know strange you say that and i just read it. because just about 2 hrs. ago I was asking the pharmacy about it on the phone and she said the same thing. to get my doctor to put "medically nessisary " on my prescription to see if that helps smart girl you are.

The paperwork should state what things are generic for, and the pharmacist should talk to the person picking up the meds. Often there is no difference in ingredients. Other times it is an inactive ingredient that is different, and can cause problems. Around here medicare/medicaid was not wanting to pay for certain seizure meds, but only the generic. At least one neurologist wrote their presciptions as "no substitute" because this was one of those cases where it did not work as well.

yes that is what was done. my doctor was back this past Monday and said she would state I needed the Singular instead of generic Monteluskat but she also said the name brand would cost 200 bucks. so I said i better stick with this in hopes. everything just costs too much these days.

I think once a medication is tested for a certain amount of years then other companies can create generics or it. Those generics are a lot lower cost and usually work just as well. Not always though.

yes not always. plus you wonder if they are observed as well by the FDA

I tend to agree with you on the generic products debate. Yet, I know people who will NOT use generic products because they believe they DO NOT work as good as the original stuff. Even though the original non-generics cost so much more! And nice pic!

yes if we can't afford the real stuff we have to settle and that is just not fair as usual if you are not rich

No. it is supposed to be "just as good" not better but cheaper because it is not regulated by the FDA as closely . so who knows if we are getting anything but sugar pills.

Generic products do seem to complicate things at times. It would be nice if we were given more information when given the Rx.

Great photo. Generics are what they use when possible but why don't they tell you, that is not right. They used to ask you if you wanted generic, not any more. I use them when I can to save money.
