If I gave you a baked potato, what would you put on it?

Yesterday someone here asked everyone what they would do with hamburger meat. I was wondering the same but with a baked potato. What would you put on your baked potato? I know some combinations are sour cream and chives, cheese and bacon bits, chili and cheese. Some just use sour cream and butter. Others just use a bit of butter and some pepper. I've always wanted to try a "Jackie Potato" like you can find in the UK. Baked Beans on a potato sounds alright to me. What do you put on a baked potato? Usually I put sour cream, a little butter and some pepper on mine. I also substitute Tzaziki for sour cream sometimes

I love it with sour cream and chives. I like butter on them. I used to put canned spinach on the baked potato. I liked it, I know it is weird.

No, that doesn't sound weird. That actually sounds pretty good to me. I love spinach so I'm sure I'd love it on a potato.

@akalinus It's unique, I like that. No baked potato for me today, but I'll have to try that the next time I make baked potatoes.

@ScribbledAdNauseum i'm dairy 'ntolerant, so make non-dairy cheese sauces. i reckon what i ought'a asked 'twas what can ya not put'n a baked tater, lol. if'n i've only a wee bunch 'f veggies left 'fter a meal, they're not goin' to waste, i put 'em'n a tater.

@ShyBear88 The restaurant I go to (and get a potato every friday) always gives me two packets of sour cream. I don't always use it, sometimes I just feel like butter and pepper. It all depends on how full I am.I love mashing the tater though, to combine the flavors.

Yes, I think I probably put a little too much butter sometimes. I will eat half of each part of the potato. Once I've eaten a certain amount, I usually mash the rest up and add lots of butter and sour cream. Oh and Pepper.

Butter, sour cream and some sort of cheese and possibly bacon bits (real ones) and maybe some chives.

All of that sounds yummy. I do like to put cheese on mine from time to time as well. Yes, real bacon bit not the nasty stuff in a bottle.

Butter, sour cream, cheddar cheese, bacon bits, and chives are usually what I put on mine. I have had one with chili and I had a great one with BBQ pulled pork and sauce, good stuff right there!

Oh wow, bbq puled pork? That does sound amazing. I am getting so many good ideas. I think the bbq pulled pork is definitely doable with my family though. I can get the bbq they have at the grocery store, I think it's Lloyds? One person doesn't like potatoes unless they are instant and so he will just have to eat the bbq.

@ScribbledAdNauseum it's so much better and cheaper to make your own pulled pork in the crock pot

Usually I will use butter, sour cream, and season with salt and pepper. I don't eat them on my diet unfortunately though :( lol. Sometimes cheese and bacon bits are good too.

Do you eat sweet potatoes instead? Sweet potatoes are supposed to be pretty healthy and I believe they are usually allowed on diet plans.

@MommyOfEli2013 Ah okay, I eat them occasionally. I try to eat foods that will help support my hormones. I have too much estrogen which wreaks havoc on my cycle.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Oh no, don't like those lol....luckily they are not low carb so I don't have to worry about it. I heard they are healthier too, but they still have too many carbs for my diet.

Butter. And CHEESE! Lots of cheese. Maybe different cheeses, definitly cheddar, maybe some blue cheese. Not quite sure the butter would be necessary if I had enough cheese.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Cheese is good with lots of thing, both warm and cold.

@Torunn I agree, but I am also very picky. If the cheese is cooked, I don't want it to be too stringy. It makes me feel ill when trying to eat it.
• United States

Yeah, you may be able to get away with not using butter if there's tons of cheese. Cheese is so good with a baked potato, I don't know why.

I like sour cream and chives more than other things on my baked potato. Also a bit of butter (not a ton) is good.

I haven't had chives on a baked potato in a very long time. I have had them on there and liked it. I have substituted tzaziki for sour cream in the past. it's basically sour cream but with lemon and cucumber. I think some use yogurt instead of sour cream.

Do you mean a Jacket Potato?? It's just a baked potato with a different name. Lots of pubs and cafes sell jacket potatoes at lunchtimes, usually with a choice of fillings. Chilli, cheese, tuna mayo, beans, etc. At home I like mine with crispy jackets {the skin} and tend to go for butter and whatever I fancy, which could be plain, or tuna, or beans, or cheese, or cottage cheese, or minced beef ...
• United States
25 Feb 19
Yes, I've heard it being said as "jacket" and "jackie", unless I've just misheard, which isn't out of the question. I've never thought of putting tuna on a baked potato, I do love tuna though. I've been getting a lot of good ideas from people here. I love baked potatoes.

@ScribbledAdNauseum You've definitely misheard! Some people have lazy accents and don't pronounce the t at the end of words. Still, I might start calling it a Jackie now. See if it catches on ... ;)

Just a little of parsley, garlic and olive oil.
• United States
25 Feb 19
All of that sounds delicious. I put olive oil on the potato before I bake it. I rinse the skin, pat it dry, poke holes in it and then put olive oil on that, wrap it in tinfoil and pop it in the oven.

Oh man. A baked potato can have NO LIMITS. On the basic side, give me some bacon bits, cheese, sour cream, onions or chives. On the extreme end I may make a meal out it with Manwich hamburger meat and all of the above plus some. You CANNOT go wrong with a baked potato is the bottom line here.
• United States
25 Feb 19
Oh my goodness, putting manwich on it? That sounds awesome! I am going to have to try that sometime. Someone else said they use taco meat on a baked potato. I've never thought of doing that. If I have left over taco meat, I usually get a bag of chips and melt some velveeta, put the taco meat in and bob's your uncle!

@porwest I would try just about anything, but I'd want the taste of the potato to come through whatever I layered on top of it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Even a mixture of Manwich and hamburger. But taco meat would be delicious as well and I am sure the wife and I have done it before. Like I said, I'll put just about anything on a potato.

@Nana49 Oh okay, thank you! I think I'd seen some recipe that required you to only cut the top off and scoop it like that, that seemed more tedious than I would want to do. Cutting it in half and doing it like that seems much easier.

@ScribbledAdNauseum you bake the potato cut it in half scoop out the insides of both pieces combine that in a bowl wirh sour cream butter and bacon or bacon bits you can add green onion if you like .. Salt and pepper after that is mixed up put that back into the empty potato hulls add cheese to the top and back for about 15 ro 20 minutes in the oven .. These are really good .. You can add what ever you like .. When you scoop it out try not to tear up the hull
