I'm Such a Doofus!

I was given a big, sturdy knee brace to wear four days ago to protect my injured knee from further damage while waiting for my MRI appointment. It's the kind that has the hinged metal pieces on either side to help give you maneuverability and stability while preventing stress on the knee. It has been clunky to wear, and I've been in a lot of pain while wearing it. So, I've only kept in on when I had to go to work or to go out anywhere; I keep it off when I am inside my house. Today, I had to run a quick errand, and while I was out I really noticed how much the brace was limiting my movement, and I thought to myself that it shouldn't be that way. So, when I got home, I tried to figure out what was going on with the brace. I then had one of those "a-ha" embarrassing moments. Turns out I have been wearing the brace backwards this entire time! No wonder I couldn't hardly move in the stupid thing! Tomorrow when I go to work, I should feel a big difference not only in my movement, but also in my comfort level, as I finally put the thing on correctly. Hey, it only took me four days to figure it out! Have you ever worn something incorrectly, whether it be a medical device or clothes or something else?

Wow four days...lol glad you figured out through. I showed up at work one time with two different colored shoes one time. One was light blue and one was black. I never noticed until after lunch.

I've done that many times with socks. Which baffles me how I didn't notice mis-matched socks when I was putting away my laundry. One time, my boss showed up to work in a nice dress shirt and tie, and we all realized right away that he was wearing his shirt inside out. We have no idea how he was able to put on his dress shirt inside out and tie his tie, but he somehow managed to do it. We let him wear it like that all day long, and only told him about it at the end of the day when it was time to go home!

Haha, yeah, I'm not surprised either. I'm always clueless about so many things. But the funny thing is, I was wearing it how the doctor showed me how to put it on. So, in reality, it was the doctor's fault because he showed me how to put in on!

I don't blame you, simple things could sometimes be complicated for us if we overlook things. A lot of difficulty for nothing lol, I really hope that you are more comfortable now and all would be well soon

@louievill In defense of the doctor, the brace looks the exact same whether you put it on the correct way or the wrong way, so I can see where the doctor was easily confused.

Since it is now evening here, I won't have a chance to wear my brace the correct way until tomorrow morning, so that will be the first time I'll get to wear it correctly. I hope it makes a big difference in my comfort level, because when I was wearing it backwards my knee was in a lot of pain.

I just kept scratching my head at why I couldn't bend my knee when the brace was on. I just figured it was a really tight and rigid brace! Now I know why! haha

@moffittjc You did not know so I am glad you figured it out. A dufess would continue wearing it the wrong way. You are not a dufess.

If it wasn't painful to wear, I probably would have kept wearing it the wrong way even after I figured it out. But it is so much more comfortable to wear now!

The brace looks the exact same whether you put it on correctly or backwards. The only difference is which way the hinged metal side pieces bend. I never thought to bend them before putting on the brace to see which way was the correct way; now I know!

@moffittjc You should been shown how to properly put it on when you got it. Oh well, now you know!

@CarolDM I was wearing it exactly how the doctor showed me how to put it on. Which means he was the one who was mistaken about the correct way to wear it! For once something is actually not my fault! LOL

@hereandthere I agree! I'm very lucky that I didn't do more damage to the knee! Fortunately, I didn't do much moving around during those 4 days, as I kept the knee propped up and iced down, so there wasn't a lot of opportunity to injure it worse.

It is much more comfortable now that I am wearing it correctly. And the doctor did show me how to wear it, he just showed me incorrectly. I let him know about it today. He took a good look at the knee brace and said "Well looky there, I did put it on you backwards!"

I'm sure I have and even when things like braces are our on correctly it doesn't mean they stay in that position. Does the braces have a home in it to go over your knee? Since I work in a store that sells them I may see the packaging more and figure some of it out. Sometimes you don't really know if it's on right unless or until the affected part begins to heal.

It has the same hole on the front and back side of the brace, which makes it even more difficult to tell the proper way to wear it.

No but once the zip of my long boots was cutting into my knee if I crossed my legs. I had them on the wrong feet!! Perhaps the brace will now be able to do the job it should be doing.
