Our dog was attacked by another dog

This afternoon my husband took our dog for a walk, and when he passed one of the houses in our village he noticed a dog behind a fence. All of a sudden the dog jumped over the fence and attacked our dog. My husband got a shock, but it doesn't look like our dog has been injured, and he was pretty good at defending himself. When they got back my husband found the owner's phone number. At first she didn't answer the phone, but she finally called back. She wouldn't believe my husband and she told him that her dog wouldn't do something like that. Fortunately there was a witness (a neighbor) He has told my husband that he saw what happened. He said that he will help my husband if there are any problems with the owner.

It was a Mastiff and it was much larger than our dog. Our dog was on a leash, but the other dog was in a garden. The other dog was without a leash. It was behind a fence, but unfortunately the dog was able to jump over the fence.

@amadeo I don't know much about them, but after this experience we don't have a positive impression of that breed.

I am very glad that there was a witness. You dog has been able to defend himself, but that dog can attack a young kid.

Yes, we are very happy that there was witness, because the owner just kept saying that her dog wouldn't do something like that. Maybe the dog hasn't done it before, but he/she did it today. You are right. My husband and I just talked about that. It could have been very dangerous if there had been a child on the sidewalk in front of that garden.

@LadyDuck That is true. I hope they change the fence. They need a higher fence if they want to keep the dog inside.

@Porcospino The fact that the owner never saw his dog doing this, it does not mean it was the first time.

People should see to it that their dogs can't just jump off their fence. I always carry a small telescopic folding baton and pepper spray when I walk my dog or take a walking exercise.

I agree. The owner should make sure that their dogs can't jump over the fence. That can be dangerous. The dog attacked our dog, and it might jump over the fence again.

Yes, fortunately our dog didn't get injured, so it could have been worse. I am glad that we finally managed to speak to the owner. She didn't answer the phone at first, but she called us back.

Fortunately our dog is okay. My husband got a shock. He had seen the dog, but he didn't expect it to jump over the fence. I am glad that we have a witness because the owner just kept saying that her dog wouldn't do something like that.

Yes, we are also happy that someone saw what happened. The same thing happened to our dog several years ago, but at that time there were no witnesses.

I am glad that you dog didn't get hurt. Sometimes accidents can happen without reasons, like that dog suddenly attacked your dog.

@Porcospino It is so terrified. Perhaps your neighbor shall build the fence higher. As nobody will have preparation if the dog jumps off the fence and attack suddenly.

Yes, sometimes that kind of things happens. We didn't expect it at all. My husband had seen the dog behind the fence when he passed the house, but he didn't expect the dog to jump over the fence.

That is horrible. It is also something that has happened to us twice. The second time our dog had to go to the vet, and we made the attackers owner pay the bill.

I am sorry to hear that you have experienced the same. I am glad that the attackers paid the bill when you had to visit the vet. It also happened to us twice. The first time it was different. We met a man and his dog in the street and the other dog wasn't on a leash.

@nonersays Yes, we have leash laws here, but some people don't care about the laws and they let their dogs walk without a leash. We would never do that, but some people think that they can do what they want.

@Porcospino It is very frustrating to have other pet owners around you not respect leash laws (assuming there are leash laws where you live because they have them here) Or if they have a pet in the yard to make sure it is secure.

@Porcospino Glad there was a witness. When I had my dog I took her with me and had to tie her to a tree or post and went inside and when I came out this dog ran off of a truck and was attacking her and I did not know what to do then the owner finally came. I checked my dog she seemed ok. I was so angry. If I could have brought her in with me then she that would never have happened.

I am sorry this happened to your dog. I would have been very angry, too. We don't leave our dog outside a store here, because there have been cases where the dogs have been stolen. When my husband and I shop together one of us wait outside. It would be horrible to come back and discover that our dog had been stolen.

@Hannihar What breed was your dog? We have a Golden Retriever. He will be 10 years old this year. He was very lively when he was younger, but he is less active today.

@Porcospino I had a lab-husky. I love labs, huskies, golden retrievers. I cannot have a dog here because no room for the kind of dog I want and not time to take out 3 times a day.

The dog that attacked our dog was a Mastiff and our dog is Golden Retriever. Our dog is very friendly, he likes to play with other dogs, but he doesn't attack them. Fortunately he was able to defend himself when that dog attacked him.
