Disappointing Start to the Tournament

Good morning everyone, it's 6:15 AM here in Las Vegas, and it is the start of day 2 of our paintball tournament, the NXL Vegas Open. In about an hour and a half we'll be playing our first round of games of the day. Yesterday was a rough day, and a horrible start to our tournament. We were seeded 3rd in our bracket of 5 teams, and unfortunately, through bad luck of the draw, we had to play the top 2 seeded teams first. And it was a disaster right from the get-go. Three of our five starters (me included) are injured, although I was the only one not to take the field in the starting lineup. However, early into the day one of my other injured teammates had to come out, and by the end of the day the third injured teammate had to come out of the game. Although we have very capable backups, the fact that they don't play day in and day out with out starters meant it was tough developing great team chemistry on the field of play. By the time our third starter came out of the game with his injury, I couldn't take it anymore, and got medical clearance from the NXL to play with a very heavy knee brace on. I don't know the exact reason, but upon my return we went on a 4-game winning streak. I was pathetic out on the field trying to hobble around out there, but I chalk up our winning streak to an increase in morale from my teammates from seeing me take the field. In the end, we lost 6-2 in our opening round, and 5-4 in our 2nd round. We were down 5-0 in the 2nd round when I came in, and as I said went on a 4-game winning streak. In the end, the clock was our enemy, as I think if we had enough time for one more game we would have ended up tying the other team 5-5 and forcing an overtime. I truly believe in my heart we would have beat them in OT. I also truly believe that this particular opponent is probably going to win the entire tournament. They are one bad-a$$ team! We have a much more favorable draw today for our third and fourth round games, and I think we can pull off victories against these two teams. If so, there is a chance we can sneak into the quarter finals tomorrow. I do not plan to play today unless our backs are against the wall. Although I am already scheduled for knee surgery at the end of this month, I don't want to damage my knee too much more than it already is. Is anybody else doing anything fun this weekend? The photo is from our team photographer as she captured me coming off the field after time expired in our second round. In my disgust, I can be seen about to pull my mask off and throw it to the ground in frustration. Thank goodness she was there to scream at me to keep my mask on, because if I had pulled it off on the field of play and thew it to the ground, I would have incurred two penalties and been ejected from the remainder of the tournament.

I'm glad you rallied the team back with your victories. I can understand how frustrating it is when you want a win but injuries play a factor in the outcome. I'm glad you didn't incur those penalties and can still play the rest of the tournament. She took a good picture. Good luck the rest of the tournament. I hope you do place in the quarter finals.

Thanks Valerie! It's just frustrating when you know your team is better than the performance they are showing on the field. But I have to keep in mind that we are playing against equally skilled teams, and that on any given day, somebody is gong to play better than everybody else.

@just4him We're off to a great start this morning. We won our opening round 3-1 over our opponent. And thankfully I didn't have to play, so I can keep resting my knee. I'll be ready to go this afternoon if need be, but I'm hoping the team will be fine.

Thank goodness your team photographer knew the rules well enough to scream at you to keep your mask on. How cool you rallied your team back on the field. I'm also sorry to learn you need knee surgery. Not cool. Good luck with the rest of the tournament.

I knew the rule, but in my frustration I had a brain fart. If I would have removed my mask, I would have incurred a major penalty. If I would have thrown my mask to the ground, I would have incurred a second major penalty. I would have been ejected from the entire 2019 season. I got away with one in our second tournament a few weeks ago, as I pulled my mask off as I was exiting the field. A referee saw it and ran over and grabbed me and pulled the mask back down over my face. Thank goodness he was cool about it instead of throwing the penalty flag. I was literally 2 steps from exiting the field. But they have very strict safety rules, and they usually don't play around when it comes to safety.

@DianneN The weird thing is, I am so calm, cool and collected on the field during the games. I'm what they call the "control man" on the field, I control the pace of action, call out the signals and codes, relay communication, identify kill counts, and direct my teammates where to shoot and where to advance too. Our attackers are very wired, hyped-up and aggressive, so I need to sometimes slow down all that energy to help them remain focused. I guess I just let the situation get the best of me at the end of the day yesterday! But thankfully it occurred after the game, and not during! If I lose it out on the field, I can get all my teammates killed (figuratively speaking).

It might be a good idea to sit the next game out!

The photo was taken at the end of the day, so it was our last game. I had plenty of time to cool down. Honestly, I was fine less than 5 minutes after walking off the field. I don't let these situations get to my head, I get it out of my system quickly and move on.

I had actually injured my knee in the previous tournament, but since I haven't had surgery on it yet, I figured it couldn't damage it any more than it already was damaged, so I took a chance playing on it. Thankfully, it held up on me in the 4 games I played. I've got to do a much better job in the future of resisting the urge to remove my mask on the field.

@moffittjc I remember you saying you injured it before. I misread and thought you hurt it more. Definitely have to resist removing the mask.

We didn't make it to the quarter finals. But I'm not too disappointed considering three out of our five starters were injured. It was a fun trip. You win some, you lose some. Overall, we are having a great season so far. Our end goal is to make it in as one of the top 20 teams in the World Cup in November.

So sorry that you will have a knee surgery, hope it is a simple thing. I am glad the photographer warned you otherwise you would make your team lose lots of points.

Our last tournament was played in the pouring rain. Three solid days of rain! I have never played in so much mud in my life! It was horrible.

It wasn't much of a comeback, as we still finished the day 0-2. I'm hoping we can rebound today and at least look presentable out on the field! haha
