For lack of a better description--most of the birds we have around here are stuff like sparrows, crows, starlings, gulls, pigeons, doves--of course, the ducks and geese at the park...regular stuff, at least here.
Last week it was, I think, I saw this one while walking Angel. At the time I didn't have my camera, and was bummed.
A neighbor across the street from the field where the bird "hangs out" told me that the field was it's hunting ground, and that he'd once seen the bird swallow a gopher.
Today I was walking Angel, and at first didn't see it and thought, "bummer" but then I caught sight of it. I moved slowly closer, trying to get a good shot, but of course the bird saw me (and, no doubt, Angel) and started strutting away.
So, I took a few photos from where I was, trying to use the "telephoto" feature on my camera. The one above is what I think was the best shot I got of the ones I took. I watched it after, and it seemed to walk down into a hole (its nest?) or the creek or something.

It looks like a Great Blue Heron. They are beautiful birds. I have only seen them near water so when you mentioned the creek I think it is a heron..

I was thinking along those lines, too (at least, the heron part) but I am no bird expert.

@xstitcher I looked up "Great Blue Heron" and saw photos that looked very similar to this bird, so I think you're right.

I was thinking maybe a crane? But the heron and crane do look very much alike so I'm not sure. Either way it's God's creation and it is beautiful! =)
