Daylight Savings Time Ramblings

I've never been a big fan of changing our clocks back and forth twice each year, thinking it is such a huge waste of time (in this case, literally). But it was a little worse for me this weekend, as I was in Vegas for a paintball tournament, and my mind was elsewhere and definitely not thinking about the time change. On Saturday night, after a long day of tournament play, and a long night of team meetings and strategy sessions, I finally went to sleep around 1:30 AM. A short while later I woke up and saw that the clock said 1:02 AM. It took me a while to figure that one out! On Sunday, due to three different time zones, I lost three additional hours on the flight back home from Vegas to Florida. So that meant I lost 4 total hours over the weekend. I was joking with my daughter today as I was driving her to work. I told her I lost an hour to the time change, and another hour trying to figure out how to work the clock in my truck! She got a little chuckle out of that one. But nothing is worse than the clock on my microwave. I've determined that I need a master's degree in electrical engineering to figure that one out. How was your adjustment to the time change this weekend?

No worse than usual, but I hate it. Wish they'd just leave it alone. Just about the time I get adjusted to it, it's time to change again.

It looks like momentum is finally picking up in Congress to finally change the laws regarding DST. Even Donald Trump has come out saying it should be changed. Love him or hate him, at least that's something we can all rally behind! lol

. I can imagine your surprise at first. I've never had a problem with time changes. My husband does all the clocks, but the car clocks need to be changed at a dealership. They stump us both.

Why do car manufacturers insist on making car clocks so hard to operate? It shouldn't take a degree in rocket science to change a damn clock!

@DianneN It almost seems like they make changing the clock difficult on purpose so you have to go to the dealership to get it changed. Then they charge you an arm and a leg for the service technician to spend 20 seconds pushing a button or something.

@moffittjc I agree! My husband is going out with his friend who is tech savvy tomorrow. If he can't change it, they will swing by the dealership in WPB for help.

The clock in my bedroom has a button to slide that sets it. We lose power often enough that I do not mess with the microwave. I have not messed with the car, either. I am a mess from being sick, though.

Sorry you are sick. Is it a cold, or allergy-related? Normally, around this time of year, I start to get hay fever pretty bad and it just wipes me out worse than any flu ever could.

We change at the end of the month. A total waste of time and I know no one who likes this change.

@moffittjc We all agree but not the politicians, what irks me is the fact I cannot understand the reason. How much goes into their pockets due to the change? This is the question.

@LadyDuck Sometimes it's hard to change the status quo, even when you want to. I have never thought about whether politicians make money off of the time change.

So it seems to be a worldwide dislike for the time change. Well, at least all of us throughout the world can agree on at least one thing....we don't like changing our clocks!

Everything worked out fine here. I just had to set my wall clock, radio alarm and the clock on my toaster oven. My PC and cell phone took care of themselves.

@moffittjc why the need to change clock on microwave?

In truth, the only clocks I had to change were the clock on my microwave, and the clock in my truck. All my other clocks changed automatically.

I never thought how terrible it would be when it came to traveling, that sounds awful. Meanwhile Arizona just sits there because we don't do anything haha I think there is one town that actually acknowledges it, but Arizona just isn't cool enough to time travel or we are smart and don't want to kill people because of all the hysteria that happens.

The Navajo Nation observes it, which makes sense considering their territory stretches across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. It gets extra confusing in some spots, though, because certain state offices on the Navajo Nation are with the rest of the state in not observing DST. The big reason that we don't follow it has to do with the daily temperatures in the summer. We need that extra hour in the mornings before things really heat up!

Now that the first day of getting up and going to work is out of the way, hopefully things will be okay. I came home and hit the hay immediately after work, though.

I wish I could adjust so easily. It seems as if I am dragging my feet more and more as this week wears on. I figure I will finally be acclimated to the time change by the end of next weekend.

I've always wondered why we don't change the clocks at 4:00pm on a Friday afternoon. Boom! Instant 5:00pm quitting time! haha

@simone10 I hope the pressure keeps building for the government to abandon the time change altogether. From what I've heard from other myLotters around the world, it seems many of their countries are also considering eliminating the time changes.

I definitely like having more daylight in the evening, but I have to get up at 4:00 in the mornin for work, so my sleep pattern at night has definitely been interrupted. It will take me an entire week to adjust.

I don't think anyone has responded that they are still in favor of the time change. It's time the governments of the world listen to the will of the people, and make the change so that we can end this silly system.

That is the plan. Several Senators are sponsoring a bill in Congress to change the federal law to let us stay on DST permanently. Let's hope it clears the committees and makes it to the floor for a full vote, and let's hope all of our Congressmen have enough sense to vote for it!

@LeaPea2417 I don't have high hopes for our elected officials. It would make too much sense for them to vote for it, which probably means they'll all vote against it. I'm beginning to think that the only way to get them to vote for it is if Trump declares that he is against it. Because they all hate Trump so much, they'll vote for it just to piss him off. Or, they'll vote for it if they can figure out a way to get rich from it. Basically...politics as usual.

I could manage it a long time if I didn't change all the clocks in the house including the microwave, but my husband changes them all the night it takes place. If I didn't change the one in my van that would throw me off, but that's the one that my husband leaves alone. Go figure. I thought we'd lose the extra daylight at night, but it's still there, so I'm fine with the changes. How old is your daughter?

Yes, I was reading about how last year after Florida voted to stay on DST permanently, several other states joined in and said they were interested as well. It just takes a little momentum to get the ball rolling, if it doesn't pass Congress this year then I imagine it will either next year or the year after. It's going to keep building, as more and more people realize there is no advantage anymore to switching clocks back and forth.
