Is it bad rejecting to be a God-Parent?

In my language they are called "Ninong" (male god father) and base on description they supposed to be witness to child's baptism or wedding. But also be sure that they help child raise in Christian Family and values. But here they are only remember during Christmas here asking for "alms" (money or any gifts in kind). Something that I stopped doing a long ago. In fact I was God father to other kids but never even knew them. Recently, one of the trike drivers we serviced asked me to be Godfather of their child for the baptism this coming 17th. But I was hesitant and told mom I wasn't comfortable with it. I mean, why didn't he just tell me and told her instead? Grandma thinks it's a blessing, but what's the point of being a Godparent if you're not gonna do your job anyways? plus, don't like the idea of hiding this Xmas just because they think they can asked me for alms.. What do you think? I hope i get a good response on this. Have a nice day.

@cherigucchi I even got the invitation. I guess it's just a one day event.

I guess this is an age old tradition we have that it is bad/rude to refuse when you are asked to be a god parent. I really do not know where this idea came from. That is why when they would come and invite me to become one I always jokingly say that I am a good guest than a godfather. But if they insist on then I cannot refuse anymore since they are the ones who insist on it. I really do not know but I think that it is ingrained in our culture that when invited to be one you just have to accept.

@Letranknight2015 Its hard to refuse that. Although I think that it’s kund of rude for them not to ask you directly and ask someone else to put you in the list.

I've never had to decline it, since i am only Ninang to my sister's kid. The real meaning of god parents is guiding the child's upbringing though, not just giving presents which is what is usually happening

Hello @lady1993 I think I'm a God parent to one of my niece. Yeah, it should be guiding them to their upbringing. This is why I was hesitant to be that trike driver's kids god parent.

Being from a non Catholic Christian sect, I was able to refuse being a godfather. I told them straight up its against my religion

I will reject this; why should I support this type of Conversion? Christian Missionries are doing god business in name of helping.

@Letranknight2015 Such type of baptism is happening in India, Missionaries are doing forced conversion of naive people by threatening them of 'God's warth' or luring with fake miracles and even copy paste of other people's faith.

You should only be a God Parent to a best friends child that you will be around while they are growing up.

Hello @jstory07 That's exactly what I was thinking. I don't know why he bother putting me in his god father list. Maybe he thought I was rich or something. Because were not really that close.
