Why are people so rude?

On the plane back from Nepal Vince met a girl who was coming to Western Australia to meet her boyfriend. They intended to work at whatever they could find so Vince suggested they look us up if they happened to be in our area. To cut a long story short, they’ve been staying with us on and off over the last fortnight. They’ve now found other accommodation and left this morning. They told us a few stories about trying to find work. While some people have been pleasant to them, others have been extremely rude. Their latest job is on an orchard near here. They have been picking plums and peaches. The first day the guy spent washing vegetables ready for market. They said the boss, a woman, screamed and yelled at them almost the whole day. This isn’t the first time they’ve had an abusive boss. The pressure was put on them to go at full speed all day. The teenage son of the woman would tell them one thing then the woman would tell them another. They came home the first night exhausted. The boy was soaking wet and had been wet most of the day. Two others that started that day only lasted a few hours and couldn’t stand the abusive language so they left. Our two friends stuck it out and are still there. They say the woman has quietened down a bit and even told them a joke yesterday. I don’t understand why people need to be so unkind and to treat these young kids so badly. Some backpackers are perhaps shirkers; others don’t understand English very well but everyone needs a little time to learn a new job. Sometimes I’m ashamed to be Australian. Photo is of a nearby apple orchard.

We definitely have our share of rude people. Too bad we're not allowed to slap them silly when they starting acting that way! haha

That is true. Being from another country they are not sure of their rights or of our laws so they are afraid to say too much.

Unfortunately this is a world wide problem not just in Australia. Some people just have no humanity. I always found treat people as you would wish to be treated be grateful for what they do and praise gets more results than scolding!

@JudyEv You would be surprised at how awful people are especially in A&E in some hospitals we have to have police in the department full time due to the violence towards the staff. Sadly today with a lot of people they think they are the only important people in the world and are as selfish as hell. It is not just old people but young people too! I usually find if people are angry and confrontational the best way of dealing with them is to remain calm let them rant and get it out of their system then talk about things in a logical and practical way!

I agree completely. I guess rudeness is everywhere but I had this stupid idea that Aussies were a bit nicer than to be so awful.

That's a shame. One would think that a boss would get better results through kindness and compassion rather than being a taskmaster.

I used to get the fly by night workers, sometimes I did not mine as long as they worked, if they did not work well I would pay them, thank them and tell them I got enough done for now.

I thinks that's more of a modern human problem then a particular Australian one. Rude people give the rest of humanity a bad name.

It depends on the attitude of people, not purely based on one's nationality; someone or somebody could be so rude and ruthless to poor people.
