"Cogito Ergo Sum"

In 1637 the French philosopher, Rene Descartes wrote his most famous quote "cogito ergo sum" which is "I think; therefore I am". He had been searching for a statement that could not be doubted. What became a secure foundation for knowledge written in his Discourse on the Method. Since he was the one doing the doubting he could not doubt that he himself existed.

I was very young when I first read in French "Je pense, donc je suis" from Rene Descartes and remember being very impressed.
